Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

I SHOWED the illustration (CM, April 7) of a fire at the Esso fuel installation at Heathrow Airport to the plant superintendent of a leading oil company here in Seattle.

The Seattle installation bears a striking resemblance to its Heathrow counterpart. His question, in the interests of improved safety regulations and precautions is: "Has the cause or probable cause been ascertained?" I think it would be interesting to know what type of fuel was being loaded when the fire started, i.e. aviation, petrol, turbine fuel, or JP-4.

BRYAN A. PARKER, Seattle, Washington, USA.

• An Esso spokesman says that the fire has been the subject of a Home Office inquiry, the report of which has not been published. Esso cannot, therefore, yet disclose the cause of the fire. The fuel being loaded was gasoline, for the installation concerned is actually outside the airport perimeter and is known as the West London depot. Aviation supplies are not loaded there.
