Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Volume 15 of Garcke's "The Motor Transport Year Book and Directory," edited by Mr. Frederick C. Garrett and published by Electrical Press, Ltd., 13-16, Fisher Street, Southampton 'Row, London, W.G.1, has reached us recently. This book is becoming more useful every year. It contains a vast amount of information regarding the industry, giving descriptive information of over 5,000 road-transport and allied undertakings, and the names and addresses of approximately 6,500 directors and officials engaged in the various businesses.

There is a section giving general information and progress of the year, and another section which gives a comprehensive survey, financial, comn3ercial and descriptive, of the public roadtransport facilities of the 'United Kingdom, as provided by registered joint stock companies, railways and other Parliamentary companies, and municipal authorities. Particulars of transport Services operated by private individuals and unincorporated companies are included wherever possible. A geographical index, arranged according to traffic areas, also maps of these areas, have been included.

Section 2 gives financial and commercial information regarding vehicle and accessory manufacturing companies. Section 3 deals with the aims, objects and constitutions of associations and societies connected with the motor industry.

A Fine New Avon Depot.

The Avon India Rubber Co., Ltd., has opened an extensive new depot at Mabledon Plage, St. Pancras, London, W.C.1. The site occupies 10,000 sq. ft. and has frontages on two streets. The building, which is designed on the most modern lines, has three storeys, these being devoted to offices, stores and servicing. The ground floor provides ample room for large vehicles, and its equipment includes a solid-tyre press, lifting tackle and air compressors.

The first floor serves as a store whilst the sales department is located on the second floor. The building is artistically decorated.

An official inspection was held last week, when Sir Herbert E. main, C.B.E., deputy chairman, and Mr. A. Peake-Jones, a leading personality of the company, were present. Metallurgists in Conference.

The annual autumn meeting of The Institute of Metals will be held in Zurich from September 13th to 15th. Prior to this the first congress of the new International Association for Testing Metals will be held at Zurich from September 6th to 12th.

Leyland Annual Outing.

The fifth annual works outing of Leyland Motors, Ltd., took place on June 20th; over 1,500 men participated in the excursion to Dublin. The proverbial hospitality of the Irish was bestowed upon those forming the party.

A large number of Leyland coaches was employed to carry the party and a special guide-book was prepared at the works for the benefit of those taking part. To show the thoroughness of the organization, it should be mentioned that street plans were included in the booklet, marking restaurants and objects of interest.

Personal Pars.

Morris Motors, Ltd., informs us that Mr. F. G. Woollard, who was general manager of the company's engines branch at Coventry, has resigned, and that the general administration of the branch has now been taken over by Mr, A. A. Rowse, director and production manager of the company.

Mr. Gordon P. Chapman, D.S.O., MC., M.I.11LT., has been appointed outside sales manager for Clarkson and Co., Ltd., of Strathclyde Works, Dalmarnock, Glasgow, the sole Scottish distributor for Firestone Tyres. His portrait is reproduced on this page; his many friends will wish him success in this new connection.

Mr. W. R. Shepherd recently informed us that his agreement as managing director of T.S. Motors, Ltd., hasP been terminated, although he remains a member of the board of directors. He was appointed managing director on January 1st, 1927, and, during his period of office' very substantial progress was made by the company. Its products continued to gain in quality, giving results which were a challenge to competitors.

We have always found Mr. Shephard particularly well balanced in his grasp of affairs in the industry.

Parking at the Royal Show.

The Royal Automobile Club will undertake parking arrangements during the Royal Show at Warwick. The various traffic routes giving access to the Show have been divided into five zones, each with its coloured label ; these are : North-east, red; north-west, yellow; east, green ; south-east, brown ; south-west, blue. Appropriate labels will be affixed to vehicle windscreens at points on the outskirts of the city. If preferred these labels can be obtained in advance from any Warwickshire County Police office, from the R.A.C., Pall Mall, London, SAVA, or from the R.A.C. Birmingham Office, County Chambers, Corporation Street. A. special approach-road map has been issued by the Club, and can be obtained free from any of its offices.
