Mr. E. S. Shrapnell-Smith, immediate Past President of the Cominercial Motor Users Association, left Southampton for Madeira in the UnionCastle M.V. " Carnarvon Castle" on Friday last.

As from August 1st, Mr. J. N. Forster will be acting as the London branch manager for Pirelli, Ltd., the well-known tyre-making concern. Mr. Forster has held responsible positions In the trade, and has for many years been associated with the tyre industry. Joining Willys Overland Crossley, Ltd., in 1919, he later took control of the London depot for Fisk tyres, and, when the Fisk Tyre Co., Ltd., was founded, be was appointed sales manager. Mr. Forster's portrait is reproduced on this page.

Pirelli, Ltd., also announces the appointment of Mr. IL L. Fraser Watson as its manager for Ireland. Mr. Watson is well known in Irish trade circles, having been connected with the trade in that country for several years in the interests of Fiat (Ireland), Ltd.

A New Studebaker Eight-cylinder Bus.

By the American mail we learn that the Studebaker Corporation is placing on the 'U.S. market a new inter-city 25-passengdr bus, built on a "straight eight" chassis and having a wheelbase of 19 ft. 2 ins. It is understood that the new model in its present form is not suitable for the British market.

British Metallurgists to Visit Germany.

'An attractive programme has been drawn up in connection with the metallurgical congress, which the Institute of Metals is holding in Dusseldorf froth September 9th-12th. The gathering is the first of its kind to be held since the war, and at the two business sessions of the congress 14 technical papers will be presented for discussion.

Stoke Issues Temporary Licences.

Motorbus licences have been renewed in Stoke-on-Trent recently for three months only, in order that the bus owners may have time to show that they arc carrying out their promises in regard to wages, time-tables and fares.

The New Bean 25-cwt. Chassis.

In our issue for last week we announced that Bean Cars, Ltd., of Tipton, was about to commence the production of a new 25-cwt. model. The company now tells us that this new chassis closely follows the design of its 30-cwt. model, the main differences being that a spiral-bevel-driven back axle is employed, as against worm drive in the 30-cwt. model, whilst smaller tyres of 33-in. by 5-in, dimensions are used instead of those of 32-in. by 6-in. dimensions. It will, of course, be understood that the standard bodywork for the lighter chassis is also somewhat smaller. The price of the new chassis is £285 and with a drop-sided body it sells at £325 and as a van at £340.

Prolonging Tyre Life.

It often happens that a tyre wears badly on the centre of its tread whilst the walls remain serviceable. In these circumstances the use of a reinforcing medium may be an economical proposition. To meet this need the Duratire preserver is marketed by the Dura.tire Preserver Co., 75, Victoria Street, London, S.W.1. The cost of two liners is £1 5s., or £2 2s. for a set of four for wheels of any size. We understand that this device is manufactured by the maker of Palmer tyres ; it consists of a band of specially compounded rubber, the exact size of the tyre.

The Royal Lancs, Agricultural Show. The Liverpool -area committee of the Commercial Motor Users Association has been distributing posters and wind. screen slips to motor owners in the Liverpool district directing attention to the Royal Lancashire Agricultural Show, which is being held in the early part of August. Coach drivers bringing parties will be given free admission to the show.

Tyneside Cross-river Communications.

The divisional road engineer of Tynemouth Corporation is to study the question of the need for cross-river communications in the Tyneside area, and he will submit a report to the Minister of Transport.
