Buses Delayed by Level Crossings.

The tramways manager submitted to a meeting of Warrington Corporation a detailed list of stoppages of motorbuses between October 24 and November 20, 1032, at the Stockton Heath Swing Bridge and the Wilderspool level crossings. At the former 589 delays had taken place, their duration being from one minute to 18 minutes ; the total time occupied was 3,012 minutes. At Wilderspool level crossings 435 delays had taken place, the duration being from one minute to 16 minutes ; the total time occupied in these delays was 1,26.5 minutes. In the aggregate the delays during the above period at both points amounted to 71 hours 17 minutes.

Economical Advantages of Motors.

At a meeting of the works committee of Tottenham Urban District Council, the engineer submitted his report upon the comparative advantages and disadvantages of horsed and mechanical transport. He emphasized that the poliey of the council to employ mechanical transport wherever possible, in view of its obvious advantages, retaining a stud of horses sufficient for normal requirements and supplementing it by hired team labour for seasonal or special road work, has so far proved economically sound.

Wallasey's Rake Lane Trams Stop To-morrow.

To-morrow, the trams operating on Wallasey Corporation's Rake Lane route will be discontinued, and on Sunday buses will be placed in service. The route is from Liscard Village to New Brighton, with a through service from New Brighton to Seacombe Ferry during peak traffic hours.

The tramways committee is to receive a report with reference to the abandonment of the whole of the existing tramway routes.

Tramways Committee's Decision Reversed.

At a meeting of the tramways committee of Wallasey Corporation it was recommended that the quotation of the Daimler Co., Ltd., for the supply of five buses at a cost of 18,060 be accepted. An amendment was moved that the quotation of Leyland Motors, Ltd., for the provision of the buses at the price of £7,650 be accepted, but the motion was rejected.

At a meeting of the finance committee, however, it was decided that the quotations of Leyland Motors, Ltd. (for chassis), and the English Electric Co., Ltd. (for bodies), at a total cost of £7,860 for the five complete buses, be accepted.

Economies to Save South Shields Transport.

At a meeting of South Shields Corporation's traniways committee, the manager reported that economies were imperative in the administration of the undertaking, otherwise there would be a deficit of £5,000 next March. The tramcar deficit for the 31 weeks ended November 2 was £1,852, and the buses were similarly on the wrong side by £861.

The manager reached the conclusion that the present-day deficit of £2,700 cannot be righted by economies alone. Ile therefore suggested, in addition to various economies, the curtailment of certain services. By the proposed economies, the revenue will balance the expenditure, and it will then be possible to pay the loan charges from revenue and materially to reduce the anticipated deficit of 15,000 at the end of the present financial year. The recommendations were adopted.

30s. Each Offered for Steam Wagons.

In considering the question of the old steam wagons, purchased second-hand in. 1919, which haVe now outlived their usefulness, the works committee of Poplar Borough Council agreed, in October last, that their further use would• be uneconomical. The best price offered was £2 each, afterwards reduced to £1 10s. each, but this figure was refused by the council.

Complete satisfaction has, it was reported, been given by the eight Karrier vehicles of different types in use in the department, and, as the standardization of plant is considered to be in the best interests of the council, it was recommended that a Karrier GH4-type 4-ton lorry, with hydraulic end-tipping gear, be purchased for £824, and a Karrier Protector 3-ton vehicle, with hydraulic end-tipping body, at £635, less an allowance for four old steam wagons, at £145.
