companies experience little business in August," says OPA's John Wild. "It is a quiet period so the full impact of the earlier increase has not gone through yet. Many companies negotiate their fuel contracts on a monthly basis so there will be two increases to take into account. We will have to see whether all the oil companies follow suit and increase their prices."
Wild says recent claims that the fall in the price of fuel has resulted in increased consumption should be treated with suspicion.
"The consumption of diesel in the first quarter of this year is up 9% on the first quarter of last year, but I take a jaundiced view of the increases," says Wild. "Even if the price of fuel is halved no-one is going to waste diesel."
