Details of Some of the Bus and Coach Services in Operation from a Popular Sussex Resort.

(), NE of the principal attractions of k./Hastings is that it is within easy reach of some of the most beautiful country in Sussex. The facilities for visiting the neighbouring beauty spots and places of interest are many, and the-charges for bus And coach journeys are as cheap as any that the south coast has to offer.

The services run by the Maidstone and District Motor Services, Ltd., are, deservedly, among the most popular in

the district. The company has a booking office in Palace Avenue, White Rock, and a commodious garage in Brook . Street, and runs regular services over a number of routes from Hastings and Bexhill. At the latter towa there is another depot and booking office. The fleet consists largely Of Leyland coaches and saloon buses, all of which are shod with pneumatic tyres, but a few Tilling-Stevens "Express" coaches have recently been used on some routes.

The principal and original route of the company is that to Maidstone, Chatham and Gillingham, via Hawkhurst and Cranbrook. During the summer months another service is operated to Maidstone, via Goudhurst, Maiden and Hunton. Regular services are run to Northiam and Tenterden, to Brede and Rye, to Bexhill and Eastbourne (in vonjunction with the Southdown Motor Services), to Cooden, via Bexhill and Little Common and to Netherfield and Ileathfieid.

Messrs. A. Timpson and Sons also run a large fleet Of passenger. vehicles.

Timpson's " is a household word in Hastings, for it was Mr. A. Timpson who was the pioneer of the London to Hastings service, which was started some years ago. Daily throughout the summer the company's coaches leave Hastings at 9.30 a.m. and. 5 p.m., with an extra number of vehicles at weekends, and without a doubt they carry the bulk of the road traffic between London and this South Coast resort. Having upwards of 60 coaches at their depots at Hastings And Catford, they are able to cope with the large amount of traffic which is available,as well as to run daily services to other places from London and to make the usual

trips from Hastings. The firm has a mixed fleet, consisting of Karrier, Leyland, Dennis, Lancia and Albion coaches, all running on pneumatic tyres. The three most recent purchases are Leyland Lioness vehicles.

In addition to tours and the services to London, Messrs. Timpson and Sons run Leyland Lion and Karrier omnibuses on two routes at Hastings and another service to the popular Fairlight Glen and Pett Level. They have now received permission to extend their routes to the borough cemetery and to Bexhill, and to institute a regular service on a circular route which, until recently, was only served by tramcar's.

Messrs. Skinners, of St. Leonardo, run a frequent service from Hastings Station to the Old Town and Ore, using Leyland double-decked omnibuses, one of which is a 59-seater. The service of the East Kent Road Car Co., Ltd., to Winehelsea and Rye and that maintained by Danegate Bros., of Beckley, between Hastings, Westfield, Brede, Northiam and Beckley with a Napier bus, are also popular.

So far as the touring side of the business is concerned, there is a large number of coaches run by various Pro. prietors. The daily runs include ser vice 6 to the following places :—East.1 bourne, Folkestone and Canterbury, Brighton, Canterbury and Margate, and Dover and Ramsgate. Half-day trips are made to Winchelsea and Rye, returning via Brede—a fine run which appears to be amongst the most popular—to Hawkliurst and. Bodiam Castle ; to Battle, via Normauhurst Court ; Brightling Needle,. Rather Val-. ley ; Tenterden and Tunbridge Wells. Evening trips at a fare of is. 6d., are largely patronized, whilst others are run to Sedlescembe and Westfield at is. per head. One enterprising proprietor, Mr. C. Mitchell, runs a return service to Eastbourne in the evening at 2s. Gd.

Other evening trips, about 20 miles long, are run to Bexhill, Cooden, Little Common, High Woods, Sidley;Fairlig,ht, Three Oaks, -Guestling, . Westfield, Battle, Whatling,ton, Sedlescombe and other places for is. Gd. per passenger. Amongst the touring coaches may be found these belonging to the concerns, already mentioned, as well as Guy vehicles an solid tyres and a few Unic and Republic vehicles on pneumatics ewned by Messrs. Mitchell and Sons, and a small fleet, comprising two new Berliets and a Daimler, which is owned by Messrs. Budd and McLeod.
