Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE uphill fight which the Thames Valley Traction Co. Ltd. has been waging to recruit and maintain staff to provide satisfactory services—particularly in East Berkshire—is not so acute as it was.

For some considerable time it was almost impossible to get replacements to cover resignations, but since April recruitments at the Maidenhead depot have gone up by 10 per cent.

Mr. C. E. Lewis, the traffic superintendent at Maidenhead, stated: "We are still far short of the numbers we really require, but are pleased with the results of our efforts to attract more staff."

He attributed much of this to the recent introduction of better conditions of service. "Since April 1," he said, "the position has gradual]: improved and our major recruitment occurred i June. This summer we have not had to cancel a many services as we did last year and during th past four weeks there have been no cancellations.

Although there was this staffing improvement Mr. Lewis emphasized that the company was no means complacent. As an incentive to singh men, a hostel at the coach station to accom modate 24 is to be opened very soon.

Acknowledging the difficulty in competim with other employers in the area where there wa a general labour shortage, the company intend to advertise for staff from other parts of du country where there is less employment.
