Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

T ECHNICAL details of the road-rail semi-trailer which has 1, been produced for British Railways by the Pressed Steel Ltd,, under licence from America, have, up to now, been sparse. This will be rectified when Pressed Steel show one of

these interesting units at the Commercial Motor Show which opens at Earls Court. London, on September 23.

The Roadrailer, as it is known, is, in effect, a semi-trailer with two sets of wheels on separate axles; flanged units for rail travel and normal 10.00-15-in. pneurnatic-tyred wheels on twin in-line axles for use on the road. The changeover from one set of wheels to the other is effected by an air-pressure actuated ball-screw gear. Air would normally be provided by a portable compressor and the change takes about 90 seconds.

Braking on the road wheels is by airoperated drum units but the flanged wheels are braked on their webs by a vacuum-powered disc system. When used in rail trains the Roadrailcrs couple one behind the other.

The prototype van trailer to be displayed at Earls Court employs integral construction with a Cor-Ten sub-frame and light-alloy bodywork. It is 24 ft. 7+ in. long, 8 ft. wide and 8 ft. 2 in. high to give a loading capacity of 1,400 cu. ft. The trailer weighs 5 tons unladen and can carry a payload of 11 tons at rail speeds up to 70 m.p.h.

They point to the advantages of tyres retreaded by the Wyresoles process in dissipating heat built up during high-speed running on motorways,
