Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Stagecoach Holdings has bought Portsmouth City Bus as the latest move in its aggressive expansion programme.

The deal strengthens Stagecoach's presence on the South Coast, following its purchase of Southdown Motor Services in August, and the two operators are expected to be combined to some degree. The deal brings another 104 vehicles and 250 staff into the Stagecoach fold.

Portsmouth City Bus was bought by a consortium of Southampton City Bus and Portsmouth employees in June 1988 for 285,000. Ian Philips, managing director of Southampton City Bus, says: "Streamlining of Portsmouth's services is required and I expect there will be some rationalisation." PCB leases its depot from Portsmouth City Council: the lease expires within two years.

El Stagecoach Holdings subsidiary East Midland of Chesterfield has expanded its services in South Yorkshire with new routes between Doncaster and Mexborough.

A group of services was won from Yorkshire Traction in the annual round of tenders, but two were subsequently returned to YTC for operational simplicity.

The company introduced double-deckers on one route between the two towns in 1986, but the new routes will be served entirely by singledeckers, bearing Stagecoach livery with a new "Dearne Valley" fleet identity.
