rOLLOWING proposals for the closure
of the "Gorton Tank" (railway) works, a number of the employees joined the staff. of Associated Electrical Industries Ltd., Trafford Park, and thus the passengers on the bus services operated by H. Thomas Motors Ltd. between Openshaw and Trafford Park had increased. This was put forward as one of the main reasons for an application for dispensation for the service by Mr. J. Backhouse when he appeared for Thomas Motors at Manchester last week.
The company had operated the express service for many years, using a 61-seater double-decker vehicle. However, this needed to come off the road for maintenance and it wished to replace it with two smaller double-deckers. At present the vehicle was sometimes so crowded that eight passengers had to stand and some were left behind as there was no room. Manchester Corporation Transport Department opposed the• application, but Mr. Backhouse 'pointed out that the only part of the applicant's route which was common to that of the objectors was at Viaduct Street.
Mr. T. E. Dale, managing director of Thomas Motors, said that the two smaller vehicles, which would replace the old unit, could carry 53 passengers each.
The chairman of the North Western Traffic Commissioners, Maj.-Gen. A. F. J. Elmslie, granted the dispensation for one 53-seater double-decked vehicle and one single-decker, pending a variation application. As the fare was below ls he suggested that the service should be changed to a stage carriage.
