-1—k A SEMI-TRAILER tanker With York Airpoise air-sus

pension running gear was demonstrated to leading road transport operators in •London on Monday. The 3,600-gal. mild-steel tank was built for Bulk Liquid Transport,Ltd.,Leeds, by the Yorkshire Engineering and Welding Co. (Bradford), Ltd., Bradford.

The tandem axles of the semi-trailer are carried. on General Tire and Rubber pillow-type air springs, the axles being rubber-mounted to the spring base plates. Braking torque reaction and axle location are provided by leading arms pivoted in rubber-bushed trunnion bearings ahead of each axle.

Dual levelling valves are mounted centrally in relation to the axles and there are four American Columbus telescopic.

dampers lying on a transverse line at the bogie centre line. The levelling-valve settings incorporate a very small delay period to give a self-levelling effect on corners.

Michelin 9.0020-in. X tyres are fitted and the prime mover is an A.E.C. with 150 b.h.p. oil engine. Mr. Peter Slater, who operates the vehicle, told The Commercial Motor that as air suspension obviously had to come he was -willing to act as a guinea pig ro further the eventual development of such

a system. He expected longer tank life because of the better suspension provided, by the Airpoise layout, particularly over' Continental road surfaces.

The Yewco tanker • semi-trailer was ordered by Mr. Slater_ last June, but it is three years since air suspension was first applied to York trailers, 50 having been built in Canada in 1955. The operators of these trailers report a 60-per-cent. reduction on spring maintenance, 50 per cent. less body maintenance, better tyre life and 25 per cent. fewer claims for goods damaged in transit.

B.T.C. CONDITION ACCEPTED VUHEN Messrs. W. J. and R. Barnes, VV Cargo, Carlisle, applied to the Northern Deputy Licensing Authority last. week for a B licence for a tipper, he added a condition to the licence restricting the use of the vehicle to the carriage of goods for two local companies within 50 miles. This was in accordance with an arrangement reached between the applicants and the objectors, the British Transport Commission,
