IN an area where trees grow at the rate of 10 ft. a year in a summer temperature of 110° F. and 100-per-cent. humidity, a fleet of Leyland and Albion oilers is working around the clock seven days a week hauling timber to railheads.

Saligna Forestry and Development Co. (Pty.), Ltd., cultivate eucalyptus, saligna and gum trees, to provide timber for hardboard, paper and the processing of rayon, in 36,000 acres of Zululand forest. Fourteen Leyland Super Hippo six-wheelers and Albion long-wheelbase four-wheelers form part of the fleet of lorries, tractors, cranes and small cross-country vehicles employed to carry trimmed and cut timber from the estates to the .1(wambonambi, Teza, Mtubatuba and Mpose railheads.

Roads are not provided on the estates, where the only precaution taken agait?st damage to vehicles is the removal of tree stumps. In dry periods a layer of fine sand up to 1 ft. deep makes it almost impossible for vehicles with single driving axles to operate. Sand stretches occur on roads running from plantation to railheads, but the vehicles mainly operate on .gravel surfaces which are slippery and dangerous in wet weather.

Most of the, fleet has been working under these conditions for up to four years, round-the-clock operation being concentrated between January and June.

All repairs are done by the company's own staff in two well-equipped depots. Servicing is performed weekly and engine oil is changed fortnightly irrespective of mileage covered.

FREE TRAVEL REJECTED

FREE travel for old people on Birmingham municipal buses has been rejected by a Select Committee of the House of Commons. A clause seeking such a concession did not gain sanction when the Birmingham Corporation General Powers Bill was dealt with by the committee.

Ald. Harry Watton, chairman of Birmingham Transport Committee, has hinted that another try may be made if a Labour Government comes into power.
