AN application for an increase inwages of employees of municipal bus undertakings and the payment of time-and-aquarter, instead of an extra 3d, an hour, for night work, was submitted by the unions to the National Joint Industrial Council for the Passenger Transport Industry on Wednesday.

Mr. A. Townsend, national passenger group secretary of the Transport and Ge ner al Workers' Union, told The Commercial Motor that no amount was specified and, contrary to reports elsewhere, the application was not even for a " substantial " increase.

A similar demand on behalf of company bus employees will be heard today by the National Council foi the Omnibus Industry. The companies are also being asked to inaugurate a pension scheme.

LONDON BUS NEGOTIATIONS BREAK DOWN 'FAILING last-minute capitulation by 1 either London busmen • or the Transport and General Workers' Union, it seems inevitable that London bus workers will go on strike at midnight on Sunday in support of their wage claim.

Efforts to avert a stoppage broke down on Monday. London Transport proposed that the Industrial Court's award of 8s. 6d. a week for central area busmen only should be accepted, strike notices cancelled and a new examination made in the autumn of the wages of men who had received no increase. This investigation would include methods of securing the most economical operation and maintenance of London road services.

Sir John Elliot, chairman of London Transport, pointed out that if employees on the country services were granted an increase, leap-frogging pay claims by the country service men and provincial operatives might ensue. If maintenance workers were awarded an increase in pay, a new cycle of wage demands in the engineering industry might begin. London Transport could not overthrow the Industrial Court's decision.

The Union countered with the suggest:on that the 8s. 6d. shouldbe shared among all the busmen, giving them about 6s. 6d. each. It was suggested that the cost would not exceed the Lim. involved in the 8s. 6d. award. The Union also proposed that the pay of all grades should be reviewed later in the year. This suggestion was rejected.
