British Equipment is Being Increasingly Demanded by Developing Overseas Municipalities : Wide Range of Proven Designs Offered

BRITISH practice in cleansing, highway and lighting maintenance and fire-fighting is appropriate to a highly developed country, and growing numbers of cities and townships in upand-coming territories overseas are adopting them so soon as they can afford to discard old-fashioned methods.

This has stimulated demand for the products of British manufacturers of municipal appliances. Buyers not only have the choice of a wide range of equipment, but the knowledge that the designs offered are based on the results of domestic operational experience, and that all arc therefore of proved efficiency.

The classified list which follows gives the names of those chassis manufacturers established as leading suppliers of municipal vehicles, covering both those who make the vehicles entirely themselves and those who offer chassis with specialist-built bodywork through their own sales organizations: specialist bodybuilders also appear, and inquiries about any particular design may be directed either to them or chassis makers (sometimes the same).

Greatest variety in designs is among refuse collectors. Three main types of appliance are built for load compaction. One works by gravity, the body being tipped upright for the contents to drop to the front. Another features a moving floor, in effect an endless conveyor belt, and the third a hydraulically or mechanically operated barrier to shift the load towards the front bulkhead. These means all presuppose end loading.

Vehicles of this class lend themselves to further refinement to achieve automatic dustless loading, a system popular for dealing with refuse from flats or other properties where it is possible to implement the use of the necessary standardsized bins.

Gully and cesspool emptiers are normally made a distinct types of vehicle, but some m nufacturls produce appliances primar ly for either of these duties but which ca secondarily be used for the other.

Emptying pf the semi-solid load of a gully emptiei may be either by a ram or simply by tiping, but tipping gear may be specified in any event if it is desired that the chasis be made interchangeable with other types of bodywork requiring this means 'or discharge. Interchangeability can a so be achieved by exploiting the use of aiticulated outfits.

Street sweepers are available based on normal chassis or built in compact sizes to operate in narrow alleys. Sweepers may carry water for laying dust disturbed during their operations, whereas vehicles primarily built for street sprinkling have greater water-carrying capacity. Trailer sweepers for preparing surfaces for topdressing are offered, and to put material on the road rather than pick it up, appliances for distributing grit, sand or salt upon slippery roads can be supplied.

The tower wagon is the well-established outfit for maintenance of overhead lighting, although it is being challenged by the type of appliance featuring a platform mounted on the end of a cranked arm.

Perhaps the most notable aspect of the development of fire-fighting appliances has been that concerned with crosscountry airfield crash tenders. Improvements have simultaneously been made in the design of standard machines. includ

ing pump escapes, water tenders and appliances built to carry the latest auxiliary equipment, such as breathing apparatus and salvaging gear.
