• Mr John Peyton, Minister for Transport Industries, is coming under strong pressure to publish a White Paper setting out the Government's long term transport policy.
In the Commons next week Mr R. C. Mitchell, Labour MP for Southampton, Itchen, will ask for a detailed statement.
"We should have a ten year strategy for transport," said Mr Mitchell. "We have to resolve this problem of how much traffic goes by rail and how much by road."
"There ought to be a national assessment very quickly otherwise we will find half our railway lines closed down."
The White Paper should also set out the Government's views on the future of fuel oil supplies.
