N the House of Commons, last week, Mr. Joynson-Hicks put questions to le Minister of Agriculture about road :ansport charges for horticultural prance. Mr. Joynson-Hicks said that he fould raise the matter again on the djournment.
He said that since road transport was ationalized, growers' costs for haulage etween the Selsey area and London ad increased to 2d. per cabbage and rom 4d. to 5s. for half a bushel of ntuces.
The Minister, Mr. Tom Williams, !plied that he was advised that the cost f road transport for the haul stated as 2s. 4id. per crate of cabbages and 0?,d. per bushel box of lettuces, with a »nimum collection charge of 5s. He id not think that existing facilities for egotiation on price schedules were mdequate.
Mr Joynson-Hicks stated that growers were unable to make a profit because of high transport charges. The Minister did not accept this claim.
Mr. Peter Thorneycroft alleged that increases in horticultural transport charges were in the order of 50-120 per cent.
