• A 53-year-old owner-driver with many years experience of driving on the Continent has been committed for trial at Canterbury Crown Court on charges of importing 495kg of cannabis.

Alfred Buckingham, who runs DW International of Erith, Kent, was charged in February after Customs at Ramsgate found the drugs lodged clearly in view at the back of his curtain-sided trailer.

Buckingham is being held at Canterbury Prison: no date has been set for the trial.
