Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ALTHOUGH there are unlikely to be any ri signs of a revolution in public cleansing at the IPC Conference in Blackpool next week, the container—in its appropriately modified refuse transportation form—will be found to have strengthened its position in the scheme of things.

Highlight of the week on the mechanical side will come on Wednesday morning when the vehicle and appliance demonstration will take place. Earthmoving units will be displayed under working conditions on Thursday morning.

The Simon Wastepaktor refuse compaction removal system has been on show in various centres up and down the country during the past two months and this equipment will be available for examination in Blackpool. The units comprise a Compaktor Unit, a portable 31 cu. yd. container, and a roll-on /roll-off rig carried on a Foden six

wheel chassis.

The Compaktors can be placed either at a central transfer station or at suitable sites in relation to the various collection rounds. After carrying out their normal duties the collection vehicles move into the Compaktor stations, the refuse then being fed into the unit which is employed in conjunction with several containers. Refuse is pressed into the container which can be anything from 8 to 40 Cu. yd. in capacity.

• Action, which is hydraulic, can be completely automatic or carried out under pushbutton control. When loading is complete the container is winched or lifted on to the vehicle for transport to the tip, an empty container being put in its place. The loading of large containers is carried out by hydraulic winch, operated from the vehicle cab, which rolls the containers up channels in a tipping beam. Among the new refuse handling units at Blackpool will be a Dumpmaster trailer by Powell Duffryn Engineering Co. Ltd., in the colours of the GLC, and a 17 cu. yd. Powell Duffryn Leach Packmaster for domestic refuse collection. Both will be on show for the first time.

The former is an articulated compaction unit with a capacity of up to 156 cu. yd., a gross vehicle weight of 30 tons, and a payload of about 16 tons. Refuse is top-fed into a hopper in the forward part of the enclosed trailer body and a six-stage 25-ton hydraulic ram compresses the contents against the rear door. A compaction ratio of about 3:1 can be achieved. The roof is equipped with steel teeth to prevent compacted refuse springing back after compression.

The Leach Packmaster has a rear loader which is filled by the crew. The contents are scooped by hydraulic means into the body, being compressed against the ejector plate. This plate is pushed towards the cab as the vehicle is filled, the action building up a resistance to aid compression. When the vehicle is full the pre-loader is raised and the ejector plate moves the length of the vehicle to discharge the load.

The CAF Autolava crusher-compactor was first offered by CAF Mechanical Handling Equipment Ltd. at the 1966 Commercial Motor Show and will now be reappearing. Basically this is an 18 cu. yd. refuse collector which is rated to deal with loose refuse of the order of 55-65 cu. yd.

Demonstrations will be given of the collector picking up bins and discharging them hydraulically into the hopper. The action is continuous, a heavy revolving drum with retractable transverse bars in its surface grinding down even such items as old furniture. When it has been treated the

refuse is propelled into the main compartment so that waste does not fall back into the loading hopper.

CAF will also show a Bennes Marrel Multi-Bucket 98/1495 unit mounted on a Ford D800 120-in. chassis-cab. This is especially equipped for the handling of derelict motor vehicles and large capacity buckets of approximately 14l6 cu. yd. On the Ford DI000 165-in, chassis will be a CAF Multilev 12-ton unit.

Ronald Perham Ltd. will be demonstrating the Karrier-Gibson refuse container lifting unit. This provides a new version of the Gibson Pendulum bin-lifter, incorporating an automatic barrier return with large area pressure plates and a speeded-up binlift-compression time cycle. The vehicle to be displayed will carry about forty 1+ cu. yd. containers of average refuse density but other sizes are available, the largest of which is equal to a loading of 50 such containers.

The New Era street sweeper, introduced by Perhams at the 1966 conference, will be seen again, this time incorporating a 10 h.p. diesel engine, the object of which is to give greater power for work on gradients.

A BMC 1.5 diesel engine will be featured in the City suction sweeper to be shown by Verro Ltd. and future models of this machine will be thus equipped. Otherwise the Verro City remains unchanged. Overall dimensions have been limited to those of a small car, with steering controlled through the rear wheels, enabling the sweeper to manoeuvre tightly around roundabouts or traffic islands and close up to parked vehicles. Where two or more "Cities" are working together, a trailer designed for the

sweeper is available into which discharge can be made.

A new design in pedestrian-controlled factory and precinct sweeper-collectors will be offered by H. Young (Motors) Ltd. in the shape of the Sturdiluxe Gannet which has an effective hopper capacity of 4+ cu. ft. It is designed to collect not only dust but all normal street refuse, broken glass, rubble and factory waste.

There is provision for adjusting the brush for wear throughout its life without having to remove it. The gutter brush, by means of a simple adjustment, can be used on either side. Youngs will also display the Glutton trailer sweeper-collector and the Sturdiluxe rear-mounted sweeper for attaching to tractors.

Modifications have been made to the loading hopper and hydraulic mechanisms of all Pakamatic machines from Shelvoke and Drewry Ltd. to facilitate the handling of refuse in paper sacks, bulky cartons and similar items. This company is engaged on a reclassification of SD refuse collection vehicles to identify individual body capacities with payloads since this aspect will be of considerable importance when the new plating and braking regulations come into force. The units exhibited will all conform to the regulations in respect of brakes.

John Gibson and Son Ltd. will introduce an entirely new 50 cu. yd. continuous loading refuse collection body, the compression action which is a development from the Gibson Pendulum system. It is a light steel fabrication and the packer plate has ballbearing pendulum suspension.

A Mark II version of the Musketeer is to be made available for inspection by Glover, Webb and Liversidge Ltd. This is a new design of the now well-known screw feed body in which special attention has been given to the impending regulations. Smaller and lighter, it is still able to carry a 64--ton effective load within a 13-ton gross weight. A single screw replaces the twin impellers of the Mark I while there has been a blending of light alloy and steel construction. The power drive has been simplified by the use of an automatic overload clutch so as to eliminate the need for hydraulic transmission.

Among other exhibits:— ATKINSON'S OF CLITHEROE LTD.

MAIN ITEMS to be shown by this company will be a Spreadmiser appliance for fitting'to platform vehicles, a wheel-driven trailer gritter with front spinner, and a 14 Cu. yd. body fitted to a Dodge 6-wheel double-drive chassis with Cummins V8 oil engine. The gritter in the last-mentioned case is a rear spread model with all requirements for motorway use.

ARENCO-ALITE LTD.

. THREE NORBA collection vehicles are to be demonstrated by Arenco-Alite Ltd. All will be on Dennis chassis although the company does build on most commercially available British makes. The Norba design employs a rear hopper with a robust screw feed to carry the refuse into the main section of the body. Norba 35 cu. yd. and 50 cu, yd. designs are to be shown and it is hoped that a further model of 50 Cu. yd. capacity will be seen working with a large container hoist although this is dependant to some extent upon the progress of the development work.

AUSTIN-COMPTON-PARKINSON ELECTRIC VEHICLES LTD.

STREET CLEANSING units of the Morrison Electricar battery-electric series will be offered by this exhibitor.

BRITISH MOTOR CORPORATION LTD.

BMC WILL exhibit an austin 7-ton FF K140 chassis with a Yorkshire Patent cesspool emptier. An Eagle sewage tanker will be similarly mounted. The Austin 8-ton FJ K160 will carry an Eagle Crushload continuous loading refuse collector whilst a Gibson bin-lift collector will be mounted on the Morris 7-ton FJ K140 chassis.

WILLIAM BUNCE AND SON

A UNIMOG four-wheel-drive chassis with rotary snow cutter will take pride of place on the Bunce stand where there will also be gritting machines, a pedestrian-controlled snow-blower, and a sweeper-collector new to Britain.

COLUMBUS DIXON LTD.

THE LITTERVAC 20 power sweeper will be shown by this company; an air-cooled engine is employed with front-wheel drive. There will also be the pedestrian controlled Littervac 10.

DENNIS BROS. LTD.

SIX OF the company's newest municipal vehicles will be displayed by Dennis Bros. Ltd, They will include the Dennis Paxit Major IIIA which has a two-stage compressing mechanism so that the hopper is cleared quickly, no hand-trimming or feeding being required. The body to be shown will be allaluminium with a crew cab. Other exhibits will be a Paxit IIIA with dustless loading equipment, a Paxit IIA a Dennis gully emptier, a Paxit Major IIIA with single cab and bin hoist, and a Pax V fitted with Powell Duffryn Dempster Dumpster equipment.

DIAL-HOLMES LTD.

AN AMERICAN power-operated crane for lifting derelict cars and other items will be introduced by this exhibitor.

EAGLE ENGINEERING CO. LTD.

EMPHASIZING the wide range of Eagle products this manufacturer will show a 3,000gal. cesspit emptier in frameless semi-trailer form, complete with a Rootes 24-ton gross tractor. The pump exhausts 125 Cu. ft. per min. and is fitted to the tractor unit. There will also be a 50 cu. yd. Crushload continuous loading refuse collector, and a 35 cu. yd. dual-purpose Compressmore bin-lifting refuse collector.

SPREADING UNITS of various types will be available on the stand occupied by this exhibitor.

FORD MOTOR CO. LTD.

THE THREE chassis to be demonstrated by Fords will include a D700 left-hand-drive chassis with Johnson Bros. suction road sweeper body. A 1,200-gall. Eagle gully emptier will be seen on the D600 chassis and a Shelvoke and Drewry Pakamatic maximum-compression refuse-collecting body will be carried on a D750 chassis.

IN ADDITION to the new Musketeer already mentioned, this maker will be exhibiting the Ramillies continuous loader in three sizes and two representatives of the Dual-Tip range.

APART FROM the new Gibson continuous loader mentioned earlier a Gibson bin-lifter and Gibson compression refuse collector will be seen.

A NEW vacuum sweeper for precincts and footpaths will be featured by this organization.

HAR BOROUGH CONSTRUCTION CO. LTD.

HALF A DOZEN battery-electrics will come from Ha rborough, some of them having speeds up to 15 m.p.h. Bodies that will be seen include one with seating for a team of five men. All are specially designed for refuse collection.

HOYNOR LTD.

THIS COMPANY'S car transporter which will be shown can be converted into a platform semi trailer by lowering the top deck. It will be accompanied by specimens of the Hoynor range of tipping trailers,

KARRIER CHASSIS will be displayed by the manufacturers in conjunction with the Dual-Tip. Ramillies, and Musketeer bodies produced by Glover, Webb and Liversidge Ltd. There will also be Karrier-Yorkshire units in the shape of a 1,000-gall. gully emptier and a road sweeper-collector.

SALVAGE TRAILERS will be shown by MFR. One of the versions available is designed for a life of 10 years in places where there are no repair facilities available: features include zinc-coated steel panels.

PEDESTRIAN-CONTROLLED sweepers will be offered by this maker.

LACRE LTD.

HIGH SUCTION power is a feature of the Lacre suction road sweeper range, of particular interest being the Model TG where the sweeping equipment is powered by a separate engine working at a fixed speed. Thus constant suction is mainta Med whatever the rate of travel. More economical in first cost is the Model SA sweeper/collector, a mechanically operated design.

MOTOR RAIL LTD.

DESIGNED FOR cleaning-up shopping centres, transport terminals, industrial estates and similar spaces, the Debris-Vac, which will be shown by Motor Rail Ltd., is fitted with a 4 h.p. Briggs and Stratton engine, with LP gas or an electric motor as alternatives. The litter bag has an 11+ cu. ft. capacity, and a 60-in, zip is provided for easy emptying.

PERKINS GROUP

THREE-. FOURand six-cylinder diesel engines will be available for inspection on the stand occupied by the Perkins Group.
