THERE is evidence that—even in London—less than the E100 a ton of unladen weight which • has become "recognized" as the "minimum price" for transport units is being

accepted. In two cases recently, tenders offering £80-05 and £70 a ton, respectively, have been accepted.

Many repeat purchases have been ,reported to The Commercial Motor this week. In the London area, a company that specialize in the country-wide delivery of magazines, periodicals, books and newspapers, have been successful with two more tenders and will soon be running more than 20 ex-B.R.S.

vehicles. NORTHERN AREA Only one acquisition in the northern area has been notified this week. It is by Mr. L Scott, Greensyke Farm, Coanwood, Hexham who has bought an Austin. Mr. Scott Was already replaced it with a Bedford 5-ton oiler. He operates one other vehicle.

NORTH-WEST

Cusick (Oldham), Ltd.. 179 Grange Avenue, Werneth, Oldham, whose take-over of 30 vehicles and nine trailers was reported on May 14, have added another nine vehicles and a trailer (601 tons) to their fleet. Another vehicle (31 tons) has been assigned to Frank Platt and Co., 192 Chapel Street, Salford 3.

The 10 vehicles concerned in this latest purchase are three Foden 14-tonners, two Fodcn 10-tanners, two E.R.F 7-tanners, a Leyland 7-tonner, a Seddon 6-tanner and a Bedford 5-tonner. They came from the Glossop depot of B.R.S. and will be based at Knott Street, Weaste, Salford 5. Trunk -services are being operated from Manchester to London and Hull as well as a service to Liverpool and daily runs to South Wales.

Mr. E. J. Edey, 78 The Albany, Old Hall Street, Liverpool, has also been successful with another tender, this time for one vehicle (7;Y. tons), based at Quarry Road, Liverpool.

Beacon Transport (Everton), Ltd., 187 Hcyworth Street, Liverpool 5, have taken over five articulated outfits comprising four Bedford-Scammell 10-tonners and a Thomycroft 7-tonner. They came from the Bretton depot of B.R.S. This company operate another six vehicles. It is intended that the newly-acquired vehicles will serve Birmingham. News of another large purchase in the north-west comes from Robertson. Buckley and Co., Ltd., Berey's Building, George Street, Liverpool 3, who have acquired 10 %chides from Macclesfield. Makes are not known, but the vehicles range from 7to 15-tonners. Along with about a dozen others, they are operating a service to the Midlands.

A third unit, this time consisting of two Bedford 6-tonners and a Fordson 5-tonner, has gone to Hunt Bros. (Culcheth), Ltd., 132 Church Lane, Culcheth, whose previous acquisitions were reported on February 12 and May 14. The Fordson has been assigned to Mr. G. Dainty, East View, Kenyon Lane, Kcnyon. These three vehicles were taken over from the Knutsford Road, Warrington, depot. Services mainly to Cumberland and Lancashire will be run by two Guy and Albion 7-tonners acquired by Mr. B. Mandale, The Garage, Greystoke, Penrith. Another successful tenderer in that area is Messrs. W. Gibson and Son. 156 Warwick Road, Carlisle, who has purchased a Bedford 6-tonner from Carleton. This B44 acquisition has increased Messrs. Gibson's fleet to 20 vehicles, all of which are engaged in general haulage. The two Albion 7-tonners taken over from British Road Services at Ripponden by Messrs. R. Howarth and Son, 28 Second Avenue, Fairfield, Bury, will be based at Fairfield Garage, Closes Estate, Fairfield, Bury. A special A licence has also been granted to Thomas Guy, Ltd,, Black Horse Farm,

Burscough, for one vehicle (5 tons). This has been assigned by Mr. William Pollard, 10 Grimshaw Lane, Ormskirk, whose acquisition of a vehicle was reported in The Comntercial Motor on May 28.

YORKSHIRE AREA Repeat purchases have been made by three operators. W. H. Sharp and Sons, Ltd., Central Station Yard, Cleckheaton, have acquired another 14 vehicles, which, like the eight reported on May 21, have been assigned to Spen Transport, Ltd., 23 Cheapside, Cleck heaton.

Seven more vehicles have gone to W. C. Forder and Sons, Ltd., Strand Garage, Main Street, Bingley, details of whose earlier purchase appeared in The Commercial Motor on June 11. S. A. Bell, Ltd., 37 Rutland Street. Filey, have acquired another 10 vehicles based at Madan Grove, Norton, Malton. F.arlier purchases were reported on March 19 and June 11.

Mr. E. R. Shields, Eastgate, Hessle, who has taken over two articulated 8-ton outfits from Leads Road, Hull, is well ahead with plans to form a new company to offer a general service.

Other purchases reported by our Yorkshire representative this week are: Mr. H. A. Cooper, 14 Coronation Road, Brimmington, Chesterfield, three vehicles; Messrs. F. and H. Murgatroyd, Lakeside Garage, Cemetery Road, Yeadon, one vehicle; Mr. M. C. Loades, Emcote, St. Mary's, King's Lynn, one vehicle, based

at 184 Leeds Road, Hull; and Mr. E. A. Moffatt, 80 Slcaford Road, Boston, Lincs, one vehicle, assigned to Boston Stevedores, Ltd. (Tower Hill Transport Co.), The Docks, Boston. and based at 20 Hounsticld Road, Sheffield 3.

Two Bedford 8-ton articulated outfits from the Leads Road, Hull depot of British Road Services have gone to the Humber Carting Agency, 208 Waterloo Street, Hull, who already operate four vehicles.

WEST MIDLANDS A second purchase, this time of four vehicles (261 tons), is reported by Guymers Transport, Ltd., Barr Common Road, Walsall. The vehicles concerned are two Foden 14-tonners, a Foden 6-wheeler and an A.E.C. 8-tanner.

Five more vehicles (23 tons), for which special A licences have been granted have been taken over by Shephard and Hough, Ltd., Earlswood, near Birmingham. Their purchase of one vehicle was reported on May 21.

Bas.sett's Roadways, The Garage, Tittensor, Stoke-on-Trent, are steadily rebuilding the business they ran before it was nationalized in 1949. Their latest purchase comprises five vehicles (241 tons). A Scottish service is operated by Mr. John Gibbon (Messrs. Cameron and Gibbon), Smethwick, who has added another three ex-B.R.S. vehicles to his fleet. They have a total unladen weight of 191 tons.

Special A licences have also been granted by the West Midlands Licensing Authority to Messrs. F. V. and J. D. Smith, 9 Horton Drive, Weston Coyney, Stoke-on-Trent, for three vehicles (14 tons), and to Mr. J. Giblin, 479 Main Road, Glascote, Tamworth, one vehicle (4i tons).

The vehicles which, as reported last week, have been purchased by Mortons (Coventry), Ltd., 12 Park Road, Coventry, are all Commers. Two are 8-ton articulated outfits and three 7-tonners (one van). This company is a subsidiary of another concern whose fleet of approximately 70 vehicles was taken over by the British Transport Commission. Since then, Mortons (Coventry), Ltd., have operated within a radius of 25 miles. Their total fleet is now 80 vehicles.

J. Woolley Transport, Ltd., 105Bells Lane, King's Norton, whose acquisition of two vehicles was also reported last week, escaped nationalization. They have been operating with five vehicles since then. The transport unit they have purchased comprises Bedford 5-timers.

EAST MIDLANDS

Six vehicles taken over by Bramwell's Haulage, Ltd., Watling Works, Stony Stratford, are part of the company's prenationalization fleet. They comprise Vulcan 6-7-tonners. and have a total unladen weight of 17 tons 19 cwt. The company are to resume their former general service, chiefly between London and Birmingham and the North. The acquisition also included their original premises.

Mr. J. B. Laban, Blackwell House, Melbourne, near Derby, who has recently been granted special A licences for a Thomycroft 6-tormer, now has a total of 12 ex-B.R.S. vehicles. They comprise four Atkinson 10-tonners, four Proctor 6-tanners, two Bedford-Scammell articulated outfits and a Foden 71-tanner. They are to be used on general haulage to all parts of the country. Since the grant of special A licences for three Bedford 5-ton tippers, Mr. Fergus Proctor. Glebe House, Brigg, has been informed that he has been successful with another tender. The vehicles concerned are all Bedfords and have varying capacities. Mr. Proctor hopes to return to his prenationalization position when, as a

teneral transport contractor, he was able o serve his customers with any form of ransport they desired. A "Ihornyeroft 7-tonner taken over by 5tainford Haulage Co., 1 Rock Terrace, Ramford; will be used on general work in England, Scotland and Wales. In addition to the purchases reported on April 2 and June 4, Messrs. W. Thompson Ind Son, Park View Estate, Crowle, Scunthorpe, have acquired another two vehicles tons 7 cwt.). One of these has been issigned to Mr. W. E. 'Harrison, Nessfield House, Garthorpe, Near Scunthorpe, whose purchase of a vehicle was reported on May 7. Five of six vehicles (25 tons 11 cwt.) concerned in the latest purchase by Mr. 0. E. Johnson, North Kelsey, Lincoln, have seen assigned to G. and C. Johnson ;Claxby), Ltd., Jessamine House, North Kelsey. They will be based at Crosby 3range, Scunthorpe. The remaining one, Commer 5-tonner, has been assigned to Mr. R. C. Hair, Castle&Id House, libaldstow. near Scawby, Brigg.

Mr. Arthur Rhodes, Nottingham, has aken over another two vehicles (10 tons 9 cwt.) and has assigned them to Len :lave (Nottingham), Ltd,, 2a Thoresby venue, Nottingham. Mr. Rhodes' peebus purchase was reported on April 23.

The East Midland Licensing Authority as also granted special A licences to the Wowing: Mr. A. W. Forth, Stanbridge toad, Leighton Buzzard, three vehicles (9 ons 11 cwt.); Mr. H. H. D. Pheascy, fillmorton, Ashford-in-the-Water, near lakewell, Ashford, two vehicles (10 tons cwt.); and Messrs. Atkin Bros., Langorth, three vehicles (12 tons).

Mr. Forth, whose business was acquired y the British Transport Commission as late s September, 1951, re-entered the industry ,st year with one vehicle operating under Contract A licence. His success with his rider for this unit came only after tenders ir several others had been rejected.

The vehicles concerned are Seddon 6-7inners, and were -in quite fair condition" hen taken over. Mr. Forth has since eerhauled them completely, and they are )w being used on a daily service to Dation and regular runs to the Gloucester

and Bristol areas. He reports that they are running fully loaded over nearly 80% of their mileage.

Unit 2554 (Burton-on-Trent), comprising three vehicles (8 tons), has been taken over by Mr. S. Booth, 1 Frederick Street, Woodville, Burton-on-Trent. He has assigned one vehicle to Mr. S. Adams, 48 Lansdowne Road, Swadlincote.

Messrs. E. T. Morris and H. Greenway, New York, Lincoln (unit 2634), are to each take one of the two vehicles they have jointly purchased.

EASTERN COUNTIES

The repeat purchase made by Patten's Transport, Ltd„ Ramsden Heath, Billericay, Essex (The Commercial Motor, last week), comprised three Commer 7-tonners. It is the company's intention to offer a better service to their prenationalization customers.

LONDON AND HOME COUNTIES

A considerable fleet of ex-B.R.S. vehicles Is being built up by Home Counties Plant Hire. Ltd., Pegasus Works, Roebuck Road, Ilford, whose acquisition of 11 vehicles was reported in The Commercial Motor on March 12. Since then they have acquired a further four comprising two Bettfoid 5-tonners and two Commers (one van). On Monday they took over another six vehicles.

This company, who, specialize in the transport of magazines, periodicals, books and newspapers to all parts of England, Scotland and Wales, are replacing all the vehicles they purchased by new Dodge

long-wheelbase lorries. In their opinion, none of the vehicles they have so far acquired was fit for long-distance haulage, and their type of work, they state, calls for first-class vehicles free; from the risk of breakdown.

A number of special traffics units has been taken over recently. Mr. L. W. Ballard, Shipman's Garages, Crown Road, St. Margaret's, Twickenham, has purchased units 2375 and 2376, both at Wimbledon, each comprising a pimtechnicon, the total unladen weight being 6 tons, C. T. Wilson Transport. Ltd., 9 Newburgh Street, London, W.1, and Matitic's Transport, Ltd., 124 High Street, Hampton Hill, Middlesex, have both purchased special traffics units. C. T. Wilson's acquisition was unit 2380 (Fulham), one vehicle (2 tons), and Maude's Transport, Ltd., Croydon unit 2382 consisting of two vans (6 tons).

Two units, comprising five articulated Bedford-Scammell outfits, have gone to Messrs. W. J. Bull and Son, Victoria Road. Romford, Essex. These were 2418 (Stratford) and 2420 (Edgware). The total unladen weight involved is 13 tons.

A unit consisting of four Guy Vixen 4tonners has been bought by Messrs Winner Transport. 88 Connington Crescent, London, E.4. These vehicles, which will be based at 69 Mansford Street, London, E.2, will be used on a regular service carrying new furniture from London to South Wales. General haulage work will also be undertaken.

Mr, C. T. Ball (Home and Ball), 8-14 St. Pancras Way, London. N.W.1, has acquired unit 2769 (Mile End) comprising a Bedford articulated glass-carrier (2 tons), and Mr. John Strank, 405 London Road, West Croydon, Surrey, has purchased a Bedford Luton van.

Mr. J. Regan, 118 Solebay Street, Mile End. E.3. has been successful with another tender, this time for three vehicles (11,1 tons), and three trailers. They have been assigned to Commercial Motors and Spates, Ltd., 63 Effra Road. London S.W.2. Details of an earlier purchase by Mr. Regan were published on May 21.

The Metropolitan Licensing Authority has also granted special A licences to the following.: W. Sullivan, Ltd., 71 Homsey Road. N.7, four vehicles (13 tons 3 cwt.). and Western Transport, Ltd_ 75 Feeder Road. Bristol, 2, three vehicles (12 tons 2 cwt.), based at 35-51 Silvertown Way, London, E.16.

W. Sullivan, Ltd., whose latest purchase, comprised Luton vans, were successful with an earlier tender (The Commercial Motor, March 19), and it is the third purchase that W2 have reported of Western Transport. Details of this company's previous purchases, which were in the western area, were given on March 26 and June 18.
