Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Transport and General Workers Union is considering leading an employee buyout at strife-torn Scottish Bus Group subsidiary Central Scottish.

Graham Stevenson, national secretary of the TGWU's passenger services group, announced in Scotland last week that he had been in contact with a former senior executive of a major English bus company to plan an employee buy

out at Central Scottish without the existing management.

The Motherwell-based passenger transport company confirms it has heard rumours of such a buyout, but says it has yet to receive a firm proposal. however, there are plans to mount a joint management/ employee buyout in preparation for privatisation, and the company plans to introduce a work force savings scheme to help fund a bid.

Central Scottish, which is due to be merged with Kelvin Scottish under the SBG selloff, has now been off the streets for almost five weeks. Workers walked out after the company attempted to introduce a revised working week, and the strike is estimated to be costing the bus operation about £400,000 a week.

As Commercial Motor went to press, Central Scottish said there was still no sign of an end to the industrial strike as all talks between management and unions had broken down.
