Richard Turner, 28, has been appointed highways and traffic adviser to the Freight Transport Association, and will progressively assume responsibility for the Association's traffic work. The present traffic officer, Walter Clarke, retires at the end of March 1974. Mr Turner was previously senior engineer in charge of the advance planning section of the Leeds city engineer's department. He has an honours degree in civil engineering.

Dr. C. P. White, 34, has been appointed London Transport principal dynamicist, and will work on design matters relating to riding qualities of buses and trains. Dr White was previously a lecturer in Applied Mathematics at London University and a design project leader with Hawker Siddeley Dynamics.

B. A. Drucker has been appointed north-western deputy area manager, BRS Parcels Ltd. He was previously manager, White City branch, Manchester.

John P. Piper, at present assistant chief engineer of the Western Welsh Omnibus Co Ltd, becomes assistant engineer (designate) of Southdown on March 1 and will succeed G. V. Read when Mr Read retires in July. George Carruthers has been appointed National Bus Company group executive-public relations, at hq; David S. Deacon becomes group executive-special duties, based at Hove; and John Niblock is group executive-marketing and operational research, based at Peterborough. They were previously regional executives.

J.L. Redburn, md of H.E. Dobbs Ltd, of Enfield, has been elected chairman of the London area of the Transport Managers' Club. J. S. Scriven, transport supervisor of RHM Foods Ltd, is secretary, and C.A. Miles, transport manager of Ruberaid . Ltd, treasurer. Ian Macdonald, 26, a traffic assistant with South Wales Transport Co Ltd, has won a medallion for the second year running for the best paper presented by student members at a meeting of the South Wales and Monmouthshire section of the CIT. Last year's winning entry by Mr Macdonald was entitled "Sociology in Transport" and this year's was "Astronautics".

J. H. Rapley, 37, has been appointed director and manager of Cravens Homalloy (Sheffield) Ltd; Mr Rapley, entered the field of containerization in 1967. J. B. Fargher, 48, becomes works director. A. Prince, 33, has been appointed works director of Cravens Homalloy (Woodville) Ltd; he has been gm since 1969.

OBITUARY

We record with regret the death of John S. Abbott.

Mr Abbott, 61, was director and general manager of Northern Counties Motor and Engineering Co Ltd, which he joined as an apprentice in 1926. He was a member of the British Institute of Carriage Builders and Engineers.
