Fred Mulley attacks "derisory" 99 permits allocation

• A strong protest is being made by a former Transport Minister, Mr Fred Mulley, Labour MP for Sheffield, Park, against what he described as the "derisory" allocation of 99 multi-lateral haulage permits for British hauliers by the EEC.
Mr Mulley has tabled a Commons question to Mr John Peyton, Minister for Transport Industries, calling for a statement on the steps the British Government intends to take to get the allocation increased.
"No doubt this is a reprisal against our refusal to accept their proposals on the size and axle weights of lorries," said Mr Mulley. "We have received a very much smaller allocation than our other partners. It seems to me to be quite unfair and can put British hauliers at a severe disadvantage.
"A lot of companies would obviously like more permits and I think the Minister should say what he is going to do about it."
Mr Mulley said he also wanted the Minister to explain whether, under the new arrangements, it would still be possible to negotiate bi-lateral agreements on permits with individual EEC countries.
Another Labour MP, Mr Kenneth Marks, Manchester, Gorton, has put down a question to Mr Peyton asking for publication of the names of firms to which the 99 licences have been issued and on what basis they were allocated.
