Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE long-awaited debate on the 1 nationalization of transport was due to open in the House of Commons yesterday.

Mr. Alfred Barnes, Minister of -Transport, • moved that the "House takes note" of the British Transport Commission's annual report, to which the Opposition tabled a critical amendment. The terms of the amendment were not known when "The Commercial Motor" closed for press.

Sir David Maxwell Fyfe, was leading for the Opposition and Mr. Peter Thorneycroft was to wind up. Mr, 1. Callaghan was concluding the Government's case.

The Opposition was to refer to the loss incurred by the B.T.C. and the Commission's prospects in the current year, writes a political correspondent. On the road transport side, the progress made by the B.T.C. in acquiring goods and passenger undertakings was to be considered, and the view was to be expressed that coach and bus companies were to be nationalized to direct traffic back to the railways by the

expedient of raising fares. •

Monday's announcement by the Minister of Transport that the B.T.C. was to seek power to raise charges other than passenger fares, to deal with an expected deficit of £20,000,000 this year and an even larger loss next year, will certainly increase the heat of the debate.
