BUSINESS

WITH the approach of Christmas there is bound to be a good deal of extra haulage business during the next week or two. The present hand-tomouth purchasing of retailers means more road transport.

North East Coast.

The consumption of planed and seism wood is satisfactory, whilst the feeling in the coal tradu is more optimistic and the increased activity in the docks, reported last wcek. is maintained. Messrs. G. Cairns and Sons, Millers Hill, Herrington Burn, Co. Durham, are to build 50 houses on the Deneside estate. and 12 houses are to be built at Shilbottle Grange, by R. Carse and Son, Ltd., Amble.

The Sulphide Corporation. Ltd., has put a" new zirx-oxide plant into operation at its Seaton Carew Works, Durham. A new factory has been opened at Gateshead for Messrs. Watson and Henderson for the manufacture of dry batteries. Ship repairing is a little brighter and there are prospects that one or two shipbuilding orders will be received on Tyneside shortly.

Middlesbrough Town Council is to build 200 houses and 12 bungalows to plans by the borough engineer. A welfare centre is to be built at Ashington Yorkshire.

Although the peak of the demand for woollen yarns for hosiery appears now to have been passed there is still ample work available. Moreover, any diminution in this business is being made up by an increase in the demand for yarns for dress goods. In the rayon factories a similar condition holds and rayon yarns are in keen demand for hosiery.

R. M. Thomson, Ltd., Sherburn, is to build 16 houses in Moor Lane, Sherburn-in-Elmet. A building at the Wadsley Mental Hospital is to be erected bv Messrs. Abbot and Bannister, 132, Meehan Bank, Sheffield.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

Still further improvement in cotton mills is reported. The home market especially is active. Silk weavers in Macclesfield and district are a little busier. The leather trade in Runcorn, Warrington and Liverpool is brisk. Boot and shoe makers in the Rossendale Valley have work to last until the end of the year. Negotiations are in hand for a new works to be put up by the Burton Wood Motor Engineering Co., at Burton Wood, near Warrington. Extensions to Oldershaw School are to be made by Messrs. Adams Bros., Edge Vale, Liverpool. The Public Works Construction Co., Swindon, is to build houses at Overton, Whitehurch, Headley, Kingsclere, Hannington and Wolverton. Warrington Corporation is having 140 houses built.

Midlands.

Northampton boot and shoe makers are fairly busy : deliveries of boots and shoes ordered in connection with cigarette distribution are due to commence almost immediately. In Leicester orders n46 are numerous, even if small, and quick delivery is essential. Rushden factories are working overtime, Wellingborough makers of slippers are refusing orders (vide last week's note on this subject). Hinckley is busy. Kettering has a share in the "coupon" orders. A new departure at Stafford is of interest : shoe manufacturers are starting repair departments, which will mean loads both to and from retailers.

Makers of small industrial electric motors are active, the demand being augmented by the steady advance of electrification in the metallurgical industries. The motorcar and cycle factories are busy.

Eight houses are to be erected at Haekleton and eight at Brafield ; the builders are Messrs. J. E. Lucas and A. Thompson, Northampton.

Wales.

Reports from this area are optimistic. The coal business is increasing in volume and a large number,of Cardiff vessels has been put.into commission after having been laid up for many months. Several large works in the district report a revival in business.

A new cinema to seat 1,500 is to be built at Oswestry at a cost of £15,000. The Gaiety Cinema, Roath, Cardiff, is to be enlarged to seat 2,500. Brock neck County Council is building a County School at Ystradgynlais. Newport Education Committee is building a new infants' school at Tredegar.

East Anglia.

A methodist church, to cost £6,000, is to be erected on the new housing estate at Mile Cross, Norwich. A new cinema is to be built in Great Yarmouth to seat 2,000 persons.

Scotland.

Although no contracts of large extent are being placed in the building trade the demand is fairly steady.

West Country, There is fair business in leather. The orders are small but the loads the numerous. Reports from the timber trade are that orders are coming in well. At the University College of the SouthWest., at Exeter, it hag been decided to build an extension at a cost of 121,849. Minehead Entertainments, Ltd,, is to erect a cinema, dance hall and 12 shops at a cost ot £40,000.

London and Home Counties.

There are steady deliveries of leather now going forward from Bermondsey in response to recent large orders. Makers of high-grade shoes are busy.

A hostel, to cost £20,000, is to be erected at Papworth, near Cambridge. Hertford County Council is to spend a further £3,000 on equipping Cell Barnes Colony. The Royal West Sussex Hospital, Chichester, is to be extended at a cost of £4,000. A secondary school is to be built at Brooks Hill, Harrow Weald, at a cost of £40,847. New schools costing £20,000 are to be built at Harpenden. W. H. Gaze and Sons, Ltd., High Street, Kingston-on-Thames, is to build shops in 'Wentworth Street, Stepney.
