Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE accompanying illustrations give a good general impression of the types of bodywork fitted to six-wheeled trolley-buses that have recently been supplied by the English Electric Co., Ltd., of Preston, to Maidstone and Nottingham Corporations. These vehicles are entirely of English Electric manufacture ; the chassis are of the three-axle type with three differentials and the driving bogie incorporating special springing arrangements. Each spring is pivoted, so that the torque reactions are balanced affd there is no transference of load from one axle to another daring either acceleration or braking. The ends of the springs also are pivoted, so that when one wheel either falls or rises the spring remains horizontal, twisting strains on the spring leaves being avoided.

The electrical equipment is of special design. In the case of the Maidstone vehicles it is of the DK-122 twin type, the rating being 80 lip. at 600 volts. A model WD1 foot-operated cam-type controlled is included, this being of novel design and giving positive action. There is a system of pneumatic braking With cylinders on alt wheels.

In the case of the Nottingham machines operation is at 500 volts. These vehicles have, in addition to pneumatic brakes, a system of rheostatic braking. It is said to be most effective, and, naturally, by its use the life of the ordinary friction material is considerably lengthened.

Apart from the chassis specification, both the Maidstone and Nottingham vehicles are interesting because of the commodious and sensible bodywork with which they have been equipped. The Maidstone trolley-buses seat 56 persons and have a particularly sound staircase design, which makes ascending and descending unusually facile. As will be seen from the accompanying illustration, the platform is extremely commodious. The Nottingham vehicles are 58seaters, also with enclosed staircases, being slightly different in respect of their frontal appearance, this embodying lines which from the point of view of trolley-bus design are very modern.
