' portation concern, has inaugurated " Unit-Haul ", a new co-ordinated roadrail-sea shipment container system wh:ch is said to be faster and more economical than normal piggy-back services.
The system uses 85-ft.-long railway flat wagons built to ,carry four 20-ft. cargo containers. These wagons are hauled on express trans-continental passenger-train services.
Key feature of the system is a special side-loader transfer unit developed in collaboration with Dempster Bros. Inc. These units, which can also be used as delivery trucks, provide side transfer of containers in less than two minutes between rail wagon and semi-trailer.
The new road-rail haulage is initially serving New York, Chicago and 60 cities and towns in the Oakland-San Francisco area.
