A Reference Back at Preston. The Streets and Buildings Com mittee of the Preston Corporation recently recommended the purchase of two Merryweather fire-engines, with reciprocating pumps, for the sum of £2400. Leyland Motors, Ltd., between the date of the recommendation and the meeting of the full council on Thursday last, represented that it had not been afforded equal facilities for tendering, and that a promised comparative test had not been carried out. Many resident employees of the Leyland Co. also made representations on the matter to members of the Preston Council.

When the recommendation of the

Committee came up last Thursday, the chairman' Councillor Manna, asked leave to withdraw it. He stated that the Committee had been influenced to some extent in its adoption of the Merryweather tender by a test that was undertaken by the Margate Corporation, but they had subsequently received an intimation that the Margate Corporation had decided to make another test. The Council approved the withdrawal, and we understand that the whole matter is therefore to be regarded as reopened.
