Colin Douglas Buchanan, B.Sc., M.T.PJ A.R.I.B.A., A.M.I.C.E., is, as the letters folios+ ing his name reveal, an architect and a civ engineer. During the time that he was i charge of the preparation of the Buchana study group report on " Traffic in Towns" was adviser on urban road planning to tt Ministry of Transport. In this he was coi tinning his career as a civil servant, hut or' of the steadily growing class of civil servan who are distinguished specialists in their ow right. This is certainly true of Colin Buchanal who is not only president of the Town Plannin Institute but who, earlier this year, became II first Professor of Transport at Imperial College, University of London. Educated Berkhamsted School and the City and Guilds Engineering College (in fact part ( Imperial College), he served with the Air Ministry and the Sudan Government helm joining the Ministry of Transport in 1935 as assistant engineer. Senior posts wh the Ministry of Town and Country Planning followed and he served in the Roy. Engineers during the war, rising to the rank of lieutenant-colonel and being mention( in dispatches. He resumed civil service duties after the war and was appointed I his advisory post at the Transport Ministry in 1960. Professor Buchanan is 56.
