Successful Start of the Steam Transport Association.

AVERY useful beginning was made with e new association of commercial motor owners on Wednesday last. This association, which is entirely confined to owners of steam vehicles or tractors, is to be called the Steam Transport Association. Its membership is open to any such owner or user, whetever his status, and it .is hoped in time to enrol every steam wagon or steam tractor owner in the country. • The objects of the association may be briefly set out as follow:— To endeavour to obtain some recognition of the importance of the steam wagon as a consunter of British fuel, that recognition to take the form of reduced taxation of steamers.

To persuade the county councils to afford improved facilities for watering, in the shape of lay-bys in new roads and the provision of water supplies in places where none is now available.

To arrange a schedule of depots where supplies of suitable coal can readily and conveniently be obtained.

To provide expert advice and assistance in legal and technical matters.

To arrange for preferential terms of insurance.

To explore the possibilities of co-operative advertising and the co-operative buying of tyres, spare parts and other essential supplies.

To arrange for the training of drivers and to look after the interests of members in Parliament.

The association will also undertake other duties on behalf of -steam vehicle and tractor owners as they are suggested and proved to be practicable. So soon as the membership reaches satisfactory figures, co-operation with other motoring and transport organizations will be sought, with a view to furthering the objects of the new association and those

of transport owners generally. It is hoped at an early date that the association will be in a position to ask to be represented on the Motor Legislative Committee.

At the opening meeting, in the Princes Rooms, Olympia, it was unanimously decided to form an association, to be called the Steam Transport Association, that title being preferred to the original one, " Steam Vehicle Association," because, according to the M.O.T. definition, a vehicle is a machine which actually carres a load, whereas it was desired to include owners and users of steam tractors in the association as well as those only concerned with steam wagons. A committee of six was formed, with powers to add to their number or co-opt other members as seemed desirable. The six membe:s elected to this committee were Major Allen,. of Oxford ; Messrs. H. W. H. Bagott, of Manchester ; E. L. Topham also of Manchester; C. E. Smith, of Birmingham; Sohn E. Heaton, of Nottingham ; and a representative of J. A. King and Co., of Hayes, Middlesex. Mr. Geo. Hoare, well known to the majority of steam-vehicle makers and users, is the secretary and his address is 20, Mountfield Road, Finchley, London, N.3.

The need for some such association as this has long been felt amongst owners of steam wagons generally ; their grievances are many, whilst their claims for attention have for long been overlooked by those existing associations In which owners of both steam and petrol vehicles are included, for the simple reason that the petrol owners were so largely in the majority. We anticipate, therefore, that there will be a splendid response to the appeal for members, and we look soon to see the majority of the owners of the 12,000 or more steamers included in the roll of the new association. We think it will be to their advantage to join, and the sooner the better.
