Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

NI Seddon Atkinson is stepping up its attack on niche construction vehicle markets with the launch at this month's IBM Show of a tough 6x4 Strato tractor (left) Intended for construction and waste operators running on to landfill sites.

The double-drive artic is now built (along with all other Seddon models) at Iveco's Madrid assembly plant and features a Cursor 13 In-lIne six rated at 440hp supplied from the Bourbon-Lancy engine plant in France.

This is the first time that Seddon has fitted a big cube Cursor engine to one of its vehicles—existing Strato tractors currently have the Cummins ISMe—as up to now the largest displacement Iveco diesel on offer has been the Cursor A In Seddon's six and eight-loggers.

Somewhat unusually for a heavy-duty 6x4 tractor, where manual transmissions still predominate, Seddon has specified a EureTronic 2 16-speed automatic gearbox. However, the Oldham-based truck maker says: "By eliminating a clutch pedal and optimising gearshifts we have made it very driver friendly." A manual option is available.

The three-axle artic is equipped with a Writer hub reduction rear bogie and in keeping with a more traditional spec for construction work, braking is split between discs on the front axle and drums on the rear. The 3.2m wheelbase Strato 6x4 comes with the choice of either a day cab or the low-roof sleeper cab derived from Ivaco's EuroTrakker multi-wheeler range. The mechanically sprung cab sits on coil springs and dampers and has air con and a night heater as standard along with an exterior roof visor, beacons and a rugged steel front bumper.

In keeping with Seddon's reputation for building low kerbweight trucks the Strata 6x4 has a tare weight of 8,910kg, fully fuelled but without a driver. National sales manager Kevin Crowder says that with wet pack hydraulic kit adding around 500kg this means the Strato 6x4 is ready to work at approximately 9.5 twines, which compares very well with anything else on offer at the moment".

Early models will be plated for 44-tonnes GCW operations but an 80-tonne STGO version is also being considered.
