THE Minister of Transport has appointed Sir Malcolm Trustram Eve, Q.C., chairman of the Road Haulage Disposals Board, with Mr. F. J. Orchin as deputy chairman. The members are Lord Rusholme, Mr. W. Gordon Graham, Mr. R. H. Farmer and Mr. J. W. Greenwood, The chairman, who is to receive £3,000 a year, and the members are to serve part-time. The deputy chairman's appointment, which also carries a salary of £3,000 a year, is full-time. Mr. Graham and Mr. Greenwood will be paid £500 a year each. but Lord Rusholme and Mr. Farmer Will be unpaid.
Lord Island is to make himself available to the Board for consultation on all questions concerning Scotland.
The appointments took effect yesterday (Thursday). The first meeting of the Board was expected to be held either yesterday or today, when the secretary would be appointed. It is thought that the Board will operate from Clive House, Petty France. London, S.W.1.
Sir Malcolm has wide interests. He has been chairman of the Burnham committees on teachers' salaries since 1950 and chairman of the Police Council on Police Salaries since 1951. He is also independent chairman of the Cement Makers' Federation.
Inside Knowledge
Until his retirement in 1950, Mr. Orchin was chief financial officer of the Road Haulage Executive. At one time he was under-secretaryto the Ministry of Transport.
Lord Rusholme is a member of the British Transport Commission.
Mr. Graham, who represents trade and industry on the Board, was formerly managing director of Morris Commercial Cars, Ltd.
Mr. Farmer is managing director of Atlas Express, Ltd., and until Wednesday of last week was a national vicechairman of the Road Haulage Association.
Mr. Greenwood, who was nominated by representatives of C-licence holders, was formerly transport manager of Thomas Firth and John Brown, Ltd., and chairman of the Sheffield Division of the T.R.T.A. HARTLEPOOL BAN TO GO? THE Ministry of Transport have I approved an application by Hartlepool Corporation to lift an embargo on the running of buses by the corporation on part of the route to West Hartlepool. The Ministry's approval will not become operative until it has been sanctioned by Parliament. The embargo was imposed 28 years ago, and the corporation asked for its removal so that they could run buses i'1,1ci West Hartlepool.
