CROSSLEY MOTORS PROFIT HIGHER IN the year ended March 31, 1945.

Crossley Motors, Ltd. made a net profit, after providing for all taxation. of £65,160, compared with £60,096 in the previous year. Out of this sum. £20,000 has been transferred to capital reserve for aepreciation of fixed assets, and a similar sum to general reserve, leaving, after the payment of a dividend of 15 per cent., less tax, a carry forward of £33,263, against £30,613 brought, in.

INST. OF T. EXAMINATION AWARDS FOR 1944

.THE Institute of Transport has made 1. the following awards in connection with its examination held in 1944:— Associate Membership Examination Prizes: (1) £20 for the best performance to Mr. K. A-. Lamb (Lep Transport, Ltd., Goole); -(2) 410 for the second best performance to Mr. J. H. Braggs , (Venture Transport, Ltd., Consett). Graduateship Examination Prizes: (1) £10 for the best performance to Mr, J. P. Hine (Fisher Renwick, Ltd., London); (2) £5 for the second best performthice to Mr. E. W. Grimm (Thomas Tilling, Ltd., Birmingham), Railway Companies' Association Prizes of £10 each for meritorious performances at the examination: (1) Associate Membership examination to Mr. B. 0. Wildman (L.M.S. Railway, Rotherham); (2) Graduateship examination to Mr. F. West (L.N.E. Railway, Nottingham). •

ENDEAVOURS TO STANDARDIZE SCREW THREADS I N August, 1944, under the auspices of the Combined Production and Resources Board, a joint U.S.-Canada Screw Thread Mission visited the United Kingdom to confer with British representatives on the subject of uniform standards for screw-thread design. A further conference on the subject is to be held in Canada in the coming autumn.

Long-standing differences in AngloAmerican engineering practice and standards of measurements which have impeded war production are to be discussed. It is estimated that differences in the design of screw threads have added at least $100,000,000 to the cost of the war, and, of course, the difficulties and problems are not confined to the war period.

The U.K. delegation will,include two representatives of the British Standards Institution, together with Government and industrial members.

We regret to learn of the death of Ma. Thomas N. J. GRAY, managing director of Road Transports Co. (Glasgow), Ltd. His enterprise in the layout and equipment of the company's headquarters organization set a new standard in servicing for the heavy.. commercial vehicle. It provides not only modern equipment for servicing, but food and accommodation facilities for drivers, as well as a centre from which loads can be distributed. SOUTHERN SECTION OF INST. • OF T. GLASGOW CORPORATION TO BUILD BUS BODIES?

I N a Provisional Order, for which its Parliamentary Bills Committee recommends application in November, Glasgow Corporation is seeking power to manufacture bodies for trolleybuses . and motorbuses.

DENNIS ATHLETIC CLUB ENTERTAINS EX-PRISONERS

A MUCH-APPRECIATED action by Pl. the Dennis Athletic Club was the entertaining on a recent Saturday of a large party of returned prisoners of war in the works canteen of Dennis Bros., Ltd. The function included snooker, tea, a concert and a dance with refreshments, the programme running from, 4 p.m. until midnight. The guests were welcomed hy the works manager, Mr. Hallpike, and the Deputy Mayor of Guildford attended.

TRADING OF HENLEY'S TELEGRAPH WORKS CO.

IN respect of 1944, the balance on trading account of W. T. Henley's Telegraph Works Co., Ltd., after providing for taxation, etc., amounted to £445,781, from which sum £97,929, written off for depreciation of buildings, machinery, etc., and certain other items, has to be deducted, leaving £347,852. A sum of £75,000 has beer transferred to war contingencies reserve account. A final dividend of 10 per cent. is being paid on the ordinary stock, making 15 per cent, for the year, in addition to a cash bonus of 5 per cent., 'and after these deductions are made £399,326 remains to be carried forward, against £395,474 brought in.
