Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ANEW type of rear axle has recently been designed by Fodeus, Ltd., for their 6-ton steam wagon. This axle is known as the C type and embodies some interesting features.

One of the most important of these is the great consideration which has been given to the problem of dismantling the axle, without the necessity for using heavy tackle, such as was formerly required.

. The axle ix made of 55-65-ton nickelchrome steel, machined on the near side ter a taper end CD which the wheel is fitted, keys assisting in holding it. The taper is not to fine, and, consequently, it is a very much easier matter to withdraw the Wheel.

The off-side end of the axle ismachined parallel for some distance and carries the differential gear and a long axle sleeve. One of the crown wheels is bolted to a flange on the axle, and the other to a flange on the axle sleeve. Both these wheels and the bevel pinions are of 40-45-tan special steel with machine-cut teeth, and the whole of the differential is enclosed in an oil-tight casing. The sleeve is provided with bushes and is tapered for the reception of the off-side road wheel.

The axle-bearing blocks are, of cast. steel and are designed carry a powerful expanding cam brake, whilst the lower block has a square hole cast. in the bottom to accommodate a cast-iron box lubricator and oil gads. The upper beat.ing accommodates the spring, which is held in position by a spring plate, which also forms an anchorage for the cam brake.

The rear-wheel-brake drums are 2 ft. 5 ins, in diameter and 4 ins, wide,whilst the road wheels themselves are of cast

steel, Another drum is mounted direct on the axle for a powerful band brake, and radius rods are, of course, provided for chain adjustment.

Every part has been desig,aed for easy removal and assembly, and replace. meats are easy, for the whole axle is jigged.
