IN 1977 89 per cent of the tonnage carried by land went by road and 11 per cent by rail. John Horam, Under Secretary for Transport, who gave these figures in the Commons, noted that in terms of tonne kilometres the rail share was higher — 19 per cent, and 81 per cent by road.
