bus-only link road
BERKSHIRE County Council has introduced a new "selfenforced" bus-only link road in an area of new housing about three miles from the centre of Reading.
The new link road was the best way of providing bus services to a new estate because it. extendedan existing route.
The link road, however, would have opened up a new short cut to the main road system, which the Council considered would cause a major increase in through traffic.
The bus link is controlled by two adjacent sets of rising steps, one for each direction of travel, which are situated at one end of the 125-metre road.
A detection system, activated by an approaching bus, causes the barrier to lower. Traffic lights are. used to signal when the barrier has been automatically lowered.
Further detectors note the departure of the bus and cause the barriers to rise when the bus leaves.
The link road is also the subject of a statutory order banning all traffic other than buses. No transponders are required to activate the system, so operators will have full flexibility to use any vehicle they require on their services.
Alder Valley, Reading Transport and Pangbourne Coaches have licensed services which will be able to use the link road.
