THE first oil-engined taxicab to be licensed for operation in the Metropolitan area was put into service on Thursday of last week. The basis is an Austin cab forming one of the fleet run by Birch Bros., Ltd., Cathcart Street, London, N.W.5.

The engine used is similar to that fitted in Ferguson tractors. This unit has four cylinders, with a bore of 312‘ ins, and a 4-in, stroke, the capacity being 2.1 litres. It has a FreemanSanders combustion chamber and the modifications called for were carried out by the Freeman-Sanders Engine Co., Ltd., Penzance.
