Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

AN interesting and most comprehensive booklet entitled "impressions of Roads and Road Research in North America," has just been published by H.M. Stationery Office at Is. 6d., net. The joint authors are Mr. W. H. Glanville, C.B.E., D.Sc., Ph.D., M.I.C.E., and Mr. F. N. Sparkes, M.Sc., M.I.C.E. They are scientists who were sent to the U.S.A. and Canada in 1946 from the Road Research Laboratory of our Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, to study the progress in applying science to road building, maintenance, use and safety.

In Britain a large part of the Laboratory's resources was diverted to special problems. As a result, the programme of road research was. hindered. This was especially so in two directions— researches into road safety which were in hand in 1939, and those into concrete roads, both being set aside for years. The visit was particularly to ascertain the progress in these and other investigations during the intervening period.

We strongly advise those of our readers who are interested in road matters, particularly from the safety aspect, to obtain a copy of this work.
