Speaking on the Budget, Lieut.Colonel Moore-Brabazon said he was sorry that the Chancellor had accepted the fetish of the Treasury to tax rcad transport as against rail transport. If transport were to be taxed, it should be in its broad sense, and not always by penalizing road transport.

Mr. MacQuisten was profoundly sorry that the Chancellor had added to the difficulties of the road-transport industry. The House was " rotten" with railway directors. There was not a Minister for Transport, but really a Minister for Preventing Transport.

B.R.F. and Budget " Imposition."

Following the Budget statement, Mr. R. Gresham Cooke, secretary of the British Road Federation, made this announcement:—Petrol and heavy oil are raw materials of the transport industry, and taxation upon them now represents over 50 per cent. of the cost of the product, a position unparalleled in any other industry of the first importance. The cost of transport enters into the cost of living, which will, consequently, be adversely affected. The road-transport industry and the motoring community now pay over 480,000,000 per annum, or approximately 9 per cent, of the national revenue.

By this fresh imposition, road transport has been further penalized, whereas other forms of competitive transport have been left untouched.

s20 There will now be less reason than ever for postponing the much-needed road programme of the country, to which the Government is contributing only 221,760,000 in the current year.
