Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

COTE of the exhibits at the .Britisl Empire Exhibition at Wembley is the new engine for cable ploughing, built by the Yorkshire Patent Steam Wagon Co., and known as the Yorkshire Power Farmer. It embodies the double-ended loco.-type boiler positioned acmes' the front, as in the case of the wagon, and has what is practically the orthodox cab. The two-cylindereti vertical engine is also situated as in the wagon and three speeds are provided.

There is unit construction of engine and gearbox, and a double-reduction gear to the jackshaft chain pinions. These drive the rear-wheel sleeves by way of two roller chains.

A large windlass for the wire cable is mounted on the back axle, and connected, when necessary, to the near-side driving sleeves by a band clutch. The eahle is carried between the two guide pulleys of an automatic shift frame operated by a large worm gear bolted to the side of the windlass. This meshes with a special wheel, which gives an automatically reversing traverse. The cable is additionally. passed round a pulley, which is carried at the end of a plunger rod and provided with a powerful compression spring, which keeps the • cable approximately in the centre of the vehicle, and also takes care of any shocks. The tubular container for the jockey pulley plunger is carried at its front end on the front axle, whilst at the rear end it runs on rollers on a double: angle steel track, the track frame being itself supported from the front cross' spring mounting and a frame crossmember

A large water-ballast tank, which also feeds the boiler, is ca,rried over the rear axle.

The rear wheels are of the tractor type, and of large diameter. They are provided with ribbed rubber tyres, whilst the front wheels, which are of the ordinary wagon type, have tyres similar to those used on the wagon.

Two-piece band brakes are provided for the rear wheels, the upper segments being supported by light compression springs.

A useful fitting is a belt pulley carried on a near-side extension of the iackshaft.
