AT the finish of the 1,200-mile Army Driving Championship at Bedford last Friday (The Commercial Motor, last week), 166 of the 181 entrants checked in after a drive which weather conditions had made tougher than the organizers had expected.

Some of the cross-country sections over War Department training areas had to be slightly modified to accept the competing field cars and laden 3-tonners. A helicopter of the Army Air Corps made a forced landing near Durham in the fog which bedevilled the drivers at intervals throughout the event, but there were only two minor accidents.

Three Sought, Two Granted

DARTIAL success attended Northern I (Allied) Trading and Transport Co., Ltd., when they asked the Scottish Licensing Authority in Glasgow last Friday to grant a variation of their A licence so as to replace three tractive units and a semi-trailer with heavier ones. The Authority, Mr. W. F. Quin, was told that the sole reason for the application was the unsuitability of the existing vehicles to do the work involved. Drivers would not stay on the vehicles. The company had spent some £2,000 on repairs, maintenance and spares in recent months in respect of five vehicles of the type involved.

Mr. Quin allowed two vehicles and the trailer, with operation of a third tractive unit on a temporary licence, already granted, giving the operator the chance to return if, at a later date, the grant proved unsatisfactory.

PAA NEW B licence was. granted at Glasgow last Friday by the Scottish Licensing Authority to a group of three companies, associated in the textile trade. Kerr, for the applicants, said that by operating one vehicle jointly, covering the goods of the three companies, substantial economies could be achieved and improved service given to. their. customers.
