• The progress of the Greater London Council's traffic and transport activities against the everchanging social and economic background of London is traced in the report of the Department of Highways and Transportation for April 1968 to July 1969. This report, just published, will be the last to come from the Department, which has now been merged into the new Planning and Transportation Department.
The report describes the work of managing the road structure so that the utmost capacity can be gained from it consistent with the preservation of safety and amenity---by a large number of schemes to improve traffic flows, eliminate conflicting streams, obtain maximum efficiency from traffic signals, control on-street parking and waiting and give special help to buses.
Passengers on Central (red) London buses predominantly made short journeys, 76 per cent travelling less than two miles in 1968 while contributing 59 per cent of the revenue from the red buses.
