MORE: than £2m has been made available by the Government to support the Lucas electric van development programme.
The E2.26m investment will amount to less than half of the total cost of the programme, but it will finance what a company spokesman told CM is the "pre-production stage", Around 120 Bedford CF-based vans are to be built over the next three years, and the first are due to enter service shortly with the London Evening News and with the Army.
An electric vehicle servicing garage is in use already at Acton, in London, and another is being prepared at a Birmingham site.
To encourage operators to buy the experimental vans instead of cheaper petrol or diesel-engined vehicles, the Government money will be used to reduce the purchase price of the electric vehicles.
