THE MOTOR Industry Research Association's crash test work has been rewarded by the presentation of the Worshipful Company of Carmen's Viva Shield for transport improvement.
MIRA, where CM tests all of its road test vehicles prior to public highway tests, operates its crash test equipment under conditions of controlled deceleration with photographic and electronic aids.
Observations of the behaviour of vehicles in simulated accidents have enabled British motor manufacturers to incorporate international standard safety features in the design of new vehicles.
One of the best known examples in the commercial vehicle industry is the Leyland National bus which was crash tested at an early development stage and which is designed to absorb impact in such areas as the front platform. The Viva shield was presented by Master of the Worshipful Company of Carmen W. A. McPhail to MIRA council chairman S. M. Parker at a ceremony last week at Haberdashers Hall, London.
