Mrs. Barbara Castle has appointed 18 members of the Transport Users Consultative Committee for the north eastern area. They are: chairman—J. R. Ropner; members: L. A. Hurt, I. S. McKay, W. V. Golding, D. Coffins, air. R. Stanley, Cllr. T. Andrews, County Aid. J. S. Goodwin, Cllr. W. Foster, W. R. Bulmer, and (new members) Cllr. H. Luxton, W. H. Meir, air. J. J. Clough, the Hon. Mrs. I. Lawson, Prof. G. H. Daysh, Col. R. J. L. Jackson, Aid. W. H. Loraine and R. Thornton. The Hon. Mrs. Lawson and Prof. Daysh are the two members the Minister is empowered to appoint without consultation; the remainder has been appointed after consultation as provided for in the Transport Act, 1962. The Minister intends soon to make further appointments. William R. Holland, deputy transport manager with Stockton-on-Tees Corporation for the past two years, has been appointed to a similar post with Middlesbrough Corporation. He succeeds R. C. Jenkins who is taking up another post at Reading.

E. Bruce Knee has been installed as president of the Institute of the Motor Industry for his second term of office and C. J. Nolan re-elected chairman of the council. Three new vicepresidents have been elected: Sir George Harriman, chairman of BMC; David L. Hegland, chairman and managing director, Vauxhall Motors Ltd.; and Sir Donald Stokes, managing director, Leyland Motor Corporation Ltd.

J. W. Bannard has been elected an honorary member of the TRTA in recognition of his many years' service. Mr. Bannard, retiring soon as head of the transport division of Unilever, was for the past six years the Association's honorary treasurer.

Sir Gilbert Roberts, who invented and patented the design of the new Severn suspension bridge, has been awarded the Worshipful Company of Carmen's Viva Award for Transport Improvement.
