Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CM REPORTED that the Freight Transport Association and Road Haulage Association have "refused to comment" on policy formation for a lorry fuel user rebate (Treasury lambasted for rejecting fuel user rebate', CM 14 January). This is truly pathetic, but it does help to drive home the point that our professional bodies have lamentably failed to educate the government on the situation that road transport is facing. A fresh approach is now vital.

And what better way can there he than to have a spokesman for our industry actually sitting inside the House of Commons? It was excellent news that Peter Carroll (pictured left), the former owner of Seymour Transport, will be contesting the Maidstone and Weald seat for the general election on a Liberal Democrat ticket, with the firm intention of becoming the spokesman for the industry.

This will keep him very busy because of the massive transport issues the next Parliament will have to address.

Carroll is surely 'in it to win it bearing in mind that the present MP, Ann Widdecombe, will be retiring and that her massive personal vote will now be very much open to persuasion.

Rudyard Kipling proclaimed that "transport is civilisation': What a splendid slogan with which Carroll could launch his election campaign on!
