San alternative route for northern road operators when Shap is snow blocked, Dennis Le Conte, secretary of the northern area of the RHA, is advocating the improvement where necessary of the West Coast route via Levens Bridge and Cockermouth. Dennis tells me he recently debated this contentious issue on Border Television with a divisional road engineer.
Road operators are not the only people "up in arms" about the regular closing of Shap. Reduced stock-holdings by credit-squeezed manufacturers has led them to place greater reliance on "clockwork" deliveries by hauliers. How much production will Shap lose this year—and next.. . .?
