Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

One of the best-known personalities in the commercial-vehicle industry is Mr. A. Whalesby Windsor, M.B.E., the popular and energetic general sales manager of Leyland Afofors, Ltd.

Mr. Windsor takes a very clearsighted view of the many problems which occur in the trade, and he has lately extended his activities to investigations in the overseas markets, for he has only recently returned from an interesting business trip in Greece. This is one more proof of the increased activity which is being displayed in the foreign markets by our makers.

Sir Herbert Austin, K.BE., has been -elected president of the Institution of Automobile Engineers for the session 1930-31, whilst Mr. C. R. F. }legelbach and Mr. W. J. Tennant have been elected vice-presidents.

We reproduce on this page a portrait of Mr. W. Leslie Cross, who has just joined A. J. -Stevens and Co. (1914), Ltd., of Wolverhampton, the maker of A.J.S. passenger and goods vehicles. Mr. Cross, who was at one time associated with Harris and Hese11, Ltd., of Bristol, will act as a special representative for the company.

L.N.E.R. Bus-service Transference.

A group of motorbus services radiating from Durham city to various parts of Durham county, which, in the past have been worked by the London and North-Eastern Railway Co., have DOW been handed over for operation by the United Automobile Services, Ltd., and the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., both of which are now associated with the railway undertaking.

Smart British Vans.

One of the two illustrations published on this page depicts a smart Guy 30cwt. vehicle which has been supplied to W. and M. Pumphrey, Ltd., of Thontaby-on-Tees. The body was built by Charles Roberts and Co.' Ltd., of Horhury Junction, and it has been specially designed for transporting goods which must not be subjected to excessive changes of climatic condi: tions. With this end in view, the body is panelled with Sundeala sheets and the interior is boarded and slatted to provide the necessary insulation. There is a sliding door in the partition behind

the driver's seat, whilst the rear door is provided with windows. There are also two large oval side windows and an Airvac ventilator. Two illuminated signs are built into the roof contour.

The other vehicle illustrated is a Vulcan forward-control 30-cwt. tilt van, which has been supplied to serve as a luggage-collection van, by Fitch, McGillivray and Co., Ltd., 167, Shaftesbury Avenue, London, W.C.2, the sole distributor in London and the Home Counties for Vulcan commercial vehicles.

More Beet by Road than by Rail.

Of 111,722 tons of sugar-beet received at the Central Sugar Factory, Peterborough, up to December 31st last, 89,197 tons were delivered by road and only 22,525 tons by railway.

Fordson Tractor Progress.

In the past month over 600 additional employees were added to the regular staff at the Cork works of Henry Ford and Son, Ltd. There are now 5,371i employees in this works engaged in the production of the Fordson tractor. The Cork plant, which has had an output of about 50-60 tractors per day, will, it is said, shortly be able to reach its contemplated regular output of 150 machines per day. On a recent occasion as many as 160 tractors left the conveyor in a single day.

Dennis Distributor in London.

F. G. Smith (Motors), Ltd., has just opened showrooms at 169, Shaftesbury Avenue, London, W.C.2, in order to handle Dennis business in London, and these are under the management of Mr. R. S. Hill. The company's existing commercial-vehicle depot at Goodmayes will, in future, be entirely devoted, under the management of Mr. S. R. Bonallack, to the sale and servicing of Morris-Commercial vehicles.

A Municipal Bus-powers Bill.

The Municipal Transport Association has arranged for Mr. John Scurr, M.P., to introduce the Bus Enabling Powers Bill which the Association is promoting on behalf of municipal

transport undertakings. The Bill is supported by local authorities, which have over £90,000,000 invested in transport.

A Special Vehicle Required.

We have received an inquiry for a special vehicle, of which the engine can be rendered available for driving a machine fixed in the body, paraffin being utilized as fuel. The weight of the mill to be driven is 7 cwt., and it requires 16 h.p. at 500-700 r.p.m. It is the power take-off combined with the use of paraffin as fuel which makes the requirements rather unusual. The alternative to a Motor lorry is to adapt a tractor and trailer, but this would involve the trailer being moved to the front of the tractor when driving the mill, and this may not always be convenient to arrange.
