Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Tecalemit Pneugrippa Machine is Now Available in Dual-purpose Form for Standardsize and Giant Tyres

CONSIDERABLE success having ....been achieved by the original Pneugrippa tyre-tread recuttingmachine, made by Tecalemit, Ltd., Great •West Road, Brentford, Middlesex, this concern has now introduced a new model, which is capable of handling the largest tyres used for commercial vehicles, as well as those of more moderate dimen sions. It is claimed that a smoothworn tyre can by one treatment be given an extra safe life on good roads of 12,000 miles, whilst many tyres will stand recutting more than once.

With regard to the non-skid properties of a treated tyre, we understand that in tests carried out at Brooklands track on an artificially prepared greasy surface, the distances required to pull up from 30 m.p.h., with the same tyres before and after treatment, were 72 ft. and 44 ft. respectively.

The machine incorporates a highspeed rotary saw which traverses and profiles the tyre, forming in the tread B28 transverse grooves about 5 mm, deep, half an inch apart. In accelerating or during retardation, the strips thus formed are deflected so that their edges bite into the road surface.

Furthermore, it is claimed that as the strips resume their normalposition sharp stones, and so forth, are flung out from between them, instead of becoming wedged and, subsequently, embedded in the tread. Each edge remains square and clean-cut, because, under normal running conditions, that in contact with the road surface remains perpendicular to it and is thus, as it were, being continually sharpened. .

Tecalemit, Ltd., has evolved a scheme by which the Pneugrippa machine can inexpensively be rented, and an idea of the economy that can be effected byfleet owners is afforded by the following scale of retail charges recommended for use by public-serVice stations: Up to 6-in. section, 4s. per cover; 8-in., Ss.; 9-in., 6s.
