• The movement of goods to and from our country and within it is vital to the economy.
4, We need to harness the available resources tor freight better, in spite of the major advantage which the lorry and van give road transport for many journeys.
• We accept that there are journeys for which there are no realistic alternatives to the car or lorry.
• We want to see cleaner cars, lorries and vans with lower levels of harmful emissions.
What the Government wants to know:
• To what extent should we be looking at the potential for restraining use of the car, van or lorry?
▪ What practical measures would bring about more use of less environmentally damaging forms of freight transport?
• Could the freight grants scheme be improved further?
• Where demand exceeds road capacity at certain times, should priority be given to goods vehicles?
