AN important meeting, having iii its objects the promotion and fostering of grouping of haulier, was held in London ,on April 20, The convenor was Mr. P. S. Woodhouse, secretary, South-Eastern Area, A.R.O., whose activities in connection with the formation of a' North and East Kent Group of Hauliers have recently been described in our news columns. The gathering was representative. "

Mr. Rudman,of the Rochdale Transport and Trading Co,, was elected to the chair. Self-preservation of the small haulier, -he said,. was the governing object of the formation of local. groups. The small man was beset by three 'fears--a political one, the fear of nationalization; fear of the railways ; fear of the greed of the large combines in the haulage industry. By combining in local groups, they could combat all three. Moreover, they could ensure that the small haulier would be enabled to give' serviceequal. to any, and they could provide the facilities needed to give such service and the Machinery to organize and manage. The aim of grouping was to implement the above objects

, and to improve, or at least maintain, the status of the smelt haulier. They should also, he thought.encourage the small haulier to take a more active share in association working.

Mr. Woodhouse said that it was the business of the associations to look after the political interests of their "members. Hauliers did not like their associations to take any hand in grouping; they looked upon all such moves with suspicion. That suspicion, In his view, was groundless. Nevertheless, it remained and was an effective bar to any success resulting from association efforts in that direction.

In his case, it was his members in the North and East Kent area who approached him to form that group. In that area most of the-local hauliers • were engaged. on the same type of -business. They are in the habit of' meeting around the association table in the course of their operations, and'they thought it would be-. a good idea to extend and consolidate the connections thus formed. The Transport and Trading Association which then came about has given confidence and stability to the operators concerned without any losS of individuality. • ■

A discussion then followed as to the. princiPles which should underlie the formation of groups of -hauliers, There were considerable differences of opinion, a fact which gave emphasis to the need for those concerned in grouping to get • together and formulate some' sort of plan to which groups should conform.

The fact that, in the minds of all. those present, grouping was sech an' ex011ent thing for the industry and that steps should, therefore, be taken to encourage and help the formation of groups; was e second reason for their meeting and associating together in efforts to that end, It was decided to form a national conference, -to meet within a month. Further, that the co-operation of the Press. should be sought to give publicity' to this move, so that others might take steps to associate themselves with it. In this connectionit is emphasized that only those actually engaged on the operation of collective groups of hauliers Will be welcomed. Parties interested should communicate with Mr. P. S. Woodhouse, 95, HighStreet, Chatham,' Kent. The date of the 'next meeting will beannounced so soon as possible.

On this occasion representatives 'of The following groups were present:— Direct 'Motor Services, Sheffield; North and East Kent Transport and Trading Co,; Bolton Transport and Trading Co.; Rochdale Transport and Trading Co.; Mutual Transport AssOciation, Derby; West Midland and District and Pool Transport, Ltd.; First Haulage Pool, London, and the Harpenden Co-operative Group.
